My ex quit community college after 1 day because his philosophy professor asked "how do we know that the things we think we know are true?" & some lady was like "it's written down in black and white! In the Bible!"
Hot take: the only true metric of human progress is the global reduction of suffering. Any technological advancement that does not work in service to this is a lateral step, not forward progress. I don't care if we get to Mars, when famine, disease, and poverty remain unsolved.
i wouldn’t call myself a fatalist or doomer about it but there’s a difference between data being available vs acted on and i don’t think people realize the sheer scope of what’s required to actually move the meter
depressing to see that most climate scientists stress the need for immediate action and stress that “doomerism” isn’t helpful, yet people still decide to be doomers—while citing the same data that those scientists are using to encourage proactive solutions.
