Well, this article is just nonsense.

Let's go over the the biggest issues: 🧵🧵

1. There's no "super-dam". The article repeatedly mentions a mythical super-dam that doesn't exist.

The hydropower project's huge capacity is based on the massive 2000m+ drop between the start and endpoints of the Yarlung Tsangpo's Great Bend, not a super-large dam. That's just how hydropower generation works; it's a function of the river's flow rate + vertical drop, not the size of the reservoir.

Current OSINT analysis suggests the project will use two dam structures, neither "super" sized. One will be no higher than ~20m, shunting water into a ~40km underground diversion tunnel where the powerhouses will be. The other is ~100km upstream and will form the seasonal reservoir.

The upstream dam's exact height isn't published, but is analyzed as somewhere between 90-150m. If it's 150m (I think this is unlikely), it will be tied for the 194th-largest dam in the world. If it's 90m...I have no idea. Not on any top rankings though.

tl;dr: Large power generation capacity ≠ large dam
