Morocco shows up as MAR on scoreboards because FIFA's country codes do not always come from the English name.

A lot of them come from French, which is the working language FIFA has used since it was founded in Paris in 1904. Morocco in French is Le Maroc. First three letters: MAR.

And Morocco is not alone. This happens more than people realise.

Germany is GER, which tracks in English. But then you get to Ivory Coast, which shows up as CIV, from Côte d'Ivoire. Algeria is ALG from Algérie. Haiti is HAI from Haïti. Switzerland is SUI from Suisse. Spain is ESP from España. Iran appears as IRN.

The pattern runs across the entire scoreboards.Some countries are also coded based on whatever their language is.

FIFA built its codes in an era when French dominated international administration, and colonial history shaped which language a country's name was recorded in first.

That legacy is still sitting quietly on every scoreboard at this World Cup.

I know a number of people who didn’t marry their “spec” but are in the healthiest marriages I know. Their spec was typically whatever was culturally deemed to be at the apex of the attractiveness pyramid when they were growing up. For a lot of guys in my generation, it was the music video “vixens” from the late 90s/early 2000s Hip & R&B music videos with ‘coke bottle figures’ and or light skinned eurocentric features. When it’s time to find a partner for the very serious endeavor of sharing a life with, that “spec” is simply inadequate as a measure of compatibility and that’s understandable. The foolishness though is communicating it as though their partner somehow didn’t measure up to their “spec” instead of simply admitting that the idea of their spec was stupid all along and a young boy’s lack of wisdom of what makes a good life partner.

Communicating publicly or even privately to your partner that they weren’t your spec to begin with may seem harmless, after-all you’re just being honest. But subconsciously, it’s an ego trip for you who “settled” and for your the partner, it’s a chip they will always carry on their shoulder that to you, they aren’t quite enough. They’re missing something you had always longed for, so much so that you still consider it to be your “spec”. It’s an unnecessary mind fuck and a cruel thing to say about somebody who is sharing a life with you. No matter how flowery you are with the compliments that come after. You’ve already knocked them down several pegs.

If the point is to say your spec changed then talk about the stupidity of having a spec to begin with. Because I’ve never heard anyone in these situations talk about character attributes being their spec, it’s always superficial stuff. Or speak about how meeting your partner opened your eyes to what true beauty is. Speak in ways that elevate and affirm your partner.

I have learned one of the hardest lessons of my life.
And I like to share what I saw yesterday in the hospital as a nurse. They brought in a patient who had an accidentt and is in the emergency room .
His wife spoke to her sister in our language that if he diess she will have to leave Lagos, sell his houses and leave . She told her sister that not a single penny will go to his family and his first son, I think he had a son before marrying her.
Shortly after a colleague came in and said she heard the man’s brother on phone call talking about property and this man is so young .
The only person that cried and kept praying is that his son. Almost ten people in the hospital only one person cried even his wife nothing .
A man is still breathing, still fightingg for his life, yet some people have already shifted their attention to what he owns.
Since they got to the hospital, theyve asked more questions about properties, documents, and assets than about the man himself.
So one of the nurse said she knows the man and that the man is very kind hearted someone that Carries people’s problem on his head .

It hurts to realize that while we total strangers are hoping and praying, some people are already thinking beyond him.
I am so sad for him because he finally gave up this morning .
