I was born in 48 and my parents didn’t have credit cards. There were 2 ways to purchase mayor items like refrigerators or furniture, first you saved up the money and second was layaway. I was taught to save money by opening a Christmas savings account were every penny you EARNED was deposited to that account and used to by presents.
