"Self-control is strength. Calmness is mastery.
You have to get to a point where your mood doesn't shift based on the insignificant actions of someone else.
Don't allow others to control the direction of your life.
Don't allow your emotions to overpower your intelligence."
The Danish philosopher Kierkegaard observed that the most common form of despair is that of not being who we really are, adding that an even deeper form of despair stems from choosing to be someone other than oneself.~Howard Sasportas
Some presenting concerns I tend to hear: can’t calm down easily, can’t enjoy, can’t get motivated, can’t get out of recurring interpersonal conflict(s), can’t stop feeling empty, can’t do or stop doing X, family member thinks I have a problem and I can’t figure out what I think.
People rarely come for help for something they explicitly identify as personality. Even though that's where the action is clinically.
They come for acute concerns like depression or anxiety, not realizing they're woven into the fabric of personality—their recurring life patterns
If Judith Herman is correct (she is), treating trauma requires a meaningful psychotherapy relationship—actual personal connection
So much for therapy apps, self-help programs, online courses, & parasocial relationships with ppl playing therapist to 100s or 1000s from a distance
"Recovery [from trauma] can take place only within the context of relationships; it cannot occur in isolation. In renewed connections with other people, the survivor recreates the psychological faculties damaged or deformed by the traumatic experience."
-Judith Herman

"long term goals tend to generate anxiety...break tasks into smaller bites...have microgoals..what you are after is a series of practical results and accomplishments, not a list of unrealized dreams and aborted projects"
Be careful of those who announce they care.
They're going to want to impose, sanction & mandate their caring on to you.
They care so much, they hurt.
Others.
It ain't about the caring.
It's about politics.
That's what they really care about.
Careful of the announced care.
In times of uncertainty and change
some cry "the sky is falling"
some insist "everything will be fine."
Some can accept not knowing.
It can be hard to resist the pull of omniscience.
