The history of kneeling in a European context was always that of a servant to a master. It signified lower status and subservience.

It was never used in the context of relationships or marriage until after World War II, when De Beers introduced men kneeling to offer a diamond ring as part of their marketing campaign aimed at women to subvert traditional marriage into a new commercial institution they could financially exploit.
