Let’s be clear about what the Trump Administration just tried to do.

Trump’s Justice Department issued subpoenas to force reporters from The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal to testify under oath before a grand jury. Not because those reporters did anything wrong, but because they reported the truth about this Administration. Trump wanted to know who talked.

One of those reporters, Ellen Nakashima of the Washington Post, covers Trump’s intelligence officials and the Iran war. Both outlets fought back in court, and the government backed down.

This Administration has also raided a reporter’s home, threatened to revoke TV stations’ broadcast licenses over coverage it didn’t like, and made it easier to secretly search journalists’ phone records. This is not a president who believes in accountability. It is a president who is trying to make sure no one can report on what he’s doing.

A free press exists to hold power accountable. That is precisely why this Administration keeps trying to undermine it.

Watergate was not a media overreaction. It was real crimes, committed by a president and his men, exposed by secret tapes and brave reporting. 

JD Vance is attempting to rewrite this history so the corruption happening right now in front of us starts to feel normal.

If Watergate was nothing, then a $620 million Pentagon loan going to a company Donald Trump Jr.’s investment firm had invested in three months earlier is nothing. 

Then $1.6 billion in U.S. government support for a Kazakhstan mining project after Trump’s sons acquired a stake is nothing. 

Then a foreign billionaire facing bribery charges receiving a presidential pardon after his daughter gave $3.5 million to a Trump super PAC is nothing. 

Then a securities fraudster who donated $1.8 million receiving a pardon that erased hundreds of millions of dollars in financial penalties is nothing. 

Then pardons for people convicted in connection with January 6, including for those who violently assaulted police officers, are nothing.

Then directing the Justice Department to investigate political opponents while granting clemency to political allies is nothing. 

If all of that is nothing, then perhaps he is correct, Watergate was nothing.

Of course he is deeply wrong.

A note to my friends who still back Trump:

I am not here to dunk on you. I am writing because you have a working brain, and this story insults it.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool got a $14 million paint job. Shortly thereafter the water turned green and the new “American flag blue” coating started peeling off the bottom in sheets. Trump says vandals did it. He claims, without evidence, that someone took a knife and cut a 300-foot slit, a number that grew to 350 feet while he was still talking.

Back on May 4, Trump bragged about that same coating and said, if you had a knife, you could not even cut it, so strong, like powerful rubber. He cannot have it both ways.

And the green water?

A George Mason scientist tested it and found ordinary, non-toxic algae, the kind that blooms in any shallow sunny pool. To fight it, crews dumped hydrogen peroxide into the water.

Hydrogen peroxide is also a paint stripper.

That, not sabotage or vandalism, is the obvious reason the paint came off. They wrecked their own paint job, then blamed phantom vandals for it.

The lone "vandal" they paraded is a 67-year-old Olympian who touched a flap of paint already peeling on its own.

Here is the thing. If they will look you in the eye and lie about something this small, something you can see with your own eyes, ask yourself what else they are lying to you about.

Again, you have a working brain. People like Karoline Leavitt are counting on you to stay loyal instead of exercising independent thought.

Prove them wrong.

This is the largest sporting event on the planet, despite what some Americans may believe, and the decision to prevent Africa's leading referee from participating in the World Cup sends an extraordinarily damaging message about the United States and the direction in which it is heading.

I am genuinely astonished that FIFA has not lodged a formal protest with the United States Government and sought intervention to ensure that this referee, who is held in the highest regard within the international refereeing community, is granted a visa to undertake one of the most important roles in world football. For any referee, appointment to a World Cup is among the greatest honours the sport can bestow.

A person's country of birth should never be the sole reason for preventing them from entering a country to carry out a specific professional duty at a specific international event. Particularly when the President of the United States publicly assured the world that participants would be welcomed.

If nationality alone has been the determining factor, then this is a serious stain upon both the tournament and the host nation. It raises profound questions about fairness, equality of treatment and whether political considerations are now taking precedence over sporting merit.

The World Cup is supposed to bring nations together. Decisions such as this achieve precisely the opposite.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the extraordinary outbursts of the President of the United States against female journalists... well, actually against journalists in general and journalism. But it feels like he saves his most childlike behavior and irrational language for female reporters, calling them all kinds of names that kids in kindergarten are given times out for. It’s stunning to me to witness such behavior from any leader, any CEO, any person of influence or importance. Every good man should denounce this behavior. Every person should be able to stand up for their colleagues and say “No more.”

Your intentional hypocrisy and your enabling of a madman who happens to be your husband won't cut it here. @jimmykimmel is a comedian and a truly decent man. Perhaps you would not recognize that quality. That said, his joke was to mock the fact that you seem in public to despise your husband. However, in light of this weekend, perhaps he wishes he could have that joke back.

That said, we cannot ignore the behavior of your husband. He has incited a level of violence and hatred in this country that is not ok. Just recently, he posted the message below about Robert Mueller's death and it was far worse than your complaint about Kimmel. He also lies. On February 18th, 2018, the day that I buried my daughter, he posted the message below about the Parkland shooting. He knew it had nothing to do with the Russia investigation, but he could not help his bullshit tendencies and narcissistic need to make it about himself. He made the worst day of my life, the day that I buried my daughter even worse.

Today, when a question about political violence came up, rather than acting Presidential and calling it out, he sounded as if he accepted it. Honestly, it had me wondering if he plans more political violence in the future which is why he chose not to call it out today. Let's not forget his role on January 6th. Will he engage in future political violence? Do you and he even discuss what he does or was Kimmel right to assume you despise him?
