A long-form #startrek fan-project chronicling the fall and rise of the Romulan empire though the Hobus disaster to the establishment of the Romulan Republic.
In 2387 the planets Romulus and Remus were destroyed. As their goverment dithered, billions would perish and billions more take to the stars.
Why and how it happened, and how it wasn't the end but a new beginning is what this project is trying to explore.
A great Swedish-American once said “Don’t waste time mourning, organise”
For the sake of my own sanity I will be taking a break from this platform. You can always find From the Ashes at that other place.
"Trouble is in the land; confusion all around. That's a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars."
I commissioned some artwork from @crwlls for the ‘Ritual’ short story and I’m sure you will all agree they absolutely knocked it out of the park, and there is so much more I can wait to share #fightingshipsofwolf359

@yyzbwj@Wolf359Project There are definitely similarities but I try to avoid having them just be “ancient Romans in space”. Instead I draw on multiple sources for inspiration, Ancient Rome being one of them .
The Romulan empire in its many iterations has for the most part functioned as a parliamentary democracy with a restricted franchise. Whether during the Second empire or during the First, Second and Third republics it has been similar in form if not in the details
During the third republic all citizen landowners within a voting segment had the franchise. This excluded the non landowners, almost all non Romulans (a select few may be awarded citizenship) and those living on frontier worlds not organised into segments.
A few senators might not be representing segments. Going back to the second republic individuals who distinguished themselves could be elected by acclamation as senators. These senators would usually be few in number and by tradition had to be elected by the entire chamber.

@FloraKaline@SciFiDavidR Oh definitely. A intelligence agency operating within the boundaries of the law and under orders of an elected government is essential. Section 31 is very much not that.
According to the Tal Shiar communications office, the statement that an interstellar power can only survive if they empower their secret black ops service is both true and “as humans say, based”
@SciFiDavidR I think he’s one hundred percent wrong. Black Ops agencies operating outside the boundary of the law is a bad thing. One of the central themes of From the Ashes is that the Tal Shiar and the romulan security state create more problems then they solve.
