I actually cant read another news story about the rape of a child, a woman or a man. The images in my head, and the emotions I'm feeling is really having an effect on me now. I am bewildered, and not very impressed, by the visceral, naked, irrational hatred spat out by some defenders of Jason Arday. If a Cambridge professor is accused of being an unqualified charlatan, the accusation might be racially motivated. On the other hand it might not, depending on the evidence. The correct question to ask is not, ”What is the colour of his skin” but “Is it in fact true that he is an unqualified charlatan?” Please examine the evidence before leaping to the assumption of racism.
As for the idea that journalists “piled in on him” and “hounded him to his death”, most attacks were against Cambridge University. Jason himself was widely regarded as an unfortunate victim of foolish promotion way beyond his ability to cope. In appointing him to a professorship for which he was manifestly unqualified – in ludicrously describing him as “the best in the world” – certain senior members of the university showed a level of patronising condescension towards black people that could fairly be described as racism, while at the same time making him tragically vulnerable to such attacks as came his way.

Yotam Budnik is a 12th-grade student from Rehovot 🇮🇱 just won a gold medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics in Uzbekistan but was not allowed to compete under the Israeli flag.

When Yotam was awarded his medal 🏅 stepped onto the podium, pulled an Israeli flag out of his pocket and wore it in defiance of the Anti-Semitic discrimination.

While the medal 🏅 was revoked from him for his courage, he has no regrets

"The law that prevents me from waving the flag is based only on politics, and I thought there was no place for that in a scientific competition", he said.

The organizers demanded that he return his medal.

Yotam said no.

Organizers took away his certificate and removed his ranking from the website.

I wrote about a public record. Claims a man made about himself, in public, over years, set against documents that were already published. I never messaged him. I never emailed him. I never contacted his family, his colleagues or his employer. Not once.

Since Friday I have been sent:

Death threats. Pictures of knives. Messages hoping I am raped. Messages hoping my family dies. Messages hoping I kill myself.

From people telling me to be kind.

From people who spent this week explaining that words have consequences, that scrutiny can break a person, that we must consider the mental health of those under pressure, that nobody should be hounded.

They mean it, too. They believe every word of it. They just don't think it applies to me, because I asked the wrong questions about the wrong person.

Nobody sending those messages has paused to wonder what they do to the person receiving them. Nobody has asked whether I am vulnerable, or whether I am coping. That concern is reserved. It is issued to some people and withheld from others, and the criteria are not compassion.

I'm not asking for sympathy. I'm pointing at the standard.

If it is monstrous to hound someone, it is monstrous when you do it. If words have consequences, they have consequences in your hands too. If mental health matters, it matters on Tuesday and it matters for people you disagree with.

Otherwise it was never a principle. It was a tactic, and you've just shown everyone which.
