#JONGSEOB in his book club exploring the issue of translation not fully expressing the nuance of AAVE, something i expressed in my review (full passage in pic)! 💭
🐈⬛: [..] it's really just... right, one of those things that koreans simply cannot understand naturally. we've read the book "theo" in korean, but this is something that comes across in english-speaking cultures — certain subtle differences in wording and such that we just wouldn't be able to pick up on, right? this person said at the end, the novel 'committed the error of reducing these characters to mere markers of difference in contrast to the norm rather than acknowledging the full complexity’. [..] and even though they use the same english, as mentioned, there can be language variants with their own unique structures.
🐈⬛: therefore, i can see how people's perceptions of this aspect might vary greatly depending on how it's being presented as text within the book. so when it came to incorporating this system of linguistic variation as an element in this book, i definitely thought quite a bit about how the way it was expressed could perhaps be a little more careful. after all since this part was explained in such detail, not only was it the first time i'd become aware of it, but i also learned a lot from this topic.
🐈⬛: [..] until now, i'd always thought of those aspects in quite simple terms, just thinking, 'oh, so this is how they've chosen to express it in korean translation,'. but when reading the original english text, or the original text in another language, these aspects might come across quite differently to readers from the cultural backgrounds in which these characters live, and i think it was only while reading this review that i first began to consider how that could happen. so when i realised that using such differences simply to highlight the cultural differences between two characters, i found myself beginning to consider: 'oh, this isn't as straightforward of a story as i thought. this could actually be problematic, and could be oversimplifying something quite complex.’
