Today, we mourn the loss of Robert Charles Anderson, a monumental figure in genealogy and a dear friend to American Ancestors. With the support of our institution, Bob launched his Great Migration Study Project in 1988 and dedicated over thirty-five years to documenting the lives of the immigrants who came to New England between 1620 to 1640.

This is tough. While imagery is offensive, it depicts heroic slave (and Muhammad Ali ancestor) Archer Alexander and paid for by freed slaves and black troops in 1865. Frederick Douglass spoke at its unveiling. Why not put up a better statue near it and use as a teaching moment?
The designers of the Emancipation Statue in Lincoln Park in DC didn’t take into account the views of African Americans. It shows. Blacks too fought to end enslavement. That’s why I’m introducing a bill to move this statue to a museum.
