I'm still hasn't over the fact that Namjoon added a painting by the Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo to his exhibition 😭. After visiting the Tamayo Museum in Mexico and seeing that there weren't many of his works in the museum that was supposed to be named in his honor,+
The transitions between each section are incredibly smooth. It’s so good that I got completely absorbed in this arrangement and almost forgot about the original soundtrack.

Namjoon about RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me via audio guide tour😭😭
🐨: Hello guys. My name is RM. I'm the leader of the group called BTS, and my Korean name is Kim Namjoon, and I'm a 31-year-old from South Korea. This exhibition is called RM SFMOMA, but, you know, it's about my personal things – so I prefer to be called as Namjoon. Or you could call me Joon, like, if it's too long.
🐨: It feels like I'm already in the space and I could see the people, like waiting in line. What I always looking forward to is… I don't know how, what it's called in English, but it's, it's ‘seollem’ in Korean.
How do you say in English? Butterflies? That sounds really romantic, but more of a like, um, you know, like expectations, for like what's gonna happen. What is today's dinner that the curators prepared for me, the chef?
🐨: Art makes me laugh and cry. And I felt really jealous because music could remain as electricity, like frequencies. It could sound different by the equipments and medias. But painting is just that one single painting. You could just get it, face it. So I just really envied the fact. But I think a lot of artists sometimes, they feel jealous of music because music could be everywhere, like in the air, when you drive, when you take a shower. But for art, like, you should go to this, like a museum. So I think that's the difference of medium. But they are all the same languages.
🐨: I make an album because all of my feelings can't be just translated by words. So that's why I make music. This exhibition is, is with the same context. I just hope you have fun. If you feel bored, just quit or just stop listening and just look through it. If there's an interest or a good memory or a curiosity or whatever, if you have something memorable after you see this exhibition, I think that's all. That's the only duty when it comes to an exhibition. Yeah, just have fun and welcome to my world. I appreciate your spending time with my confusion.

En 1936, Hollywood descubrió a una española que bailaba como una tormenta. Venía de una barraca de chabolas de Barcelona y no sabía leer ni escribir.
Pero cuando sus pies golpeaban el suelo, los estudios enteros se quedaban en silencio...
In the lead up to RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me, I’ve been revisiting some of his interviews related to his fine art journey. Today I dug up his 2022 NY Times profile
Through the books I’ve read over the years on Korean art history, I’m realising that the questions Joon keeps returning to, about what it means to be a Korean artist on the global stage, is not a new one
Korean artists have been working through versions of this question for more than a century. First against a long history of Sinicisation, then under Japanese colonial rule & the arrival of Western imperialism
What does it mean to make modern art as a Korean artist? How do you engage with artistic languages that come from elsewhere without losing what makes the work yours?
These are questions that sits at the heart of both his upcoming SFMOMA exhibition & ARIRANG
And in Yun Hyong-keun, he found an forerunner, an artist who worked out his own timeless answer, whose work he described as “a complete kind of combination of Western and Eastern, or Asian or Korean styles”
This mirrors, in some ways, how he’s described his upcoming exhibition: “between East and West, Korea and America, the modern and the contemporary, the personal and the universal” With his hope being that the exhibition can act as “a small but sturdy bridge” between them
