Finally! Reason for Gong Jiho instead of Kim Jiho!
🐯 After I joined the company, the CEO suggested: "How about promoting with this name?". I liked it right away, as it felt easy to remember. The name has a round, soft vibe to it. My real name feels a bit gender-neutral, and adding 'Gong' softened it. I liked that feel, and the CEO was supportive, so we made the decision together. At first, I thought changing just one syllable wouldn't make a difference, but it really did.

#️⃣ On her 10th debut anniversary, Gong Jiho begins a new chapter as an actress.
Jiho debuted in 2015 with Oh My Girl and left a legacy of beloved songs. In 2022, she left the group and declared her transition into acting. Now, in 2025, three years later, she officially begins her acting career through 'Buried Hearts'. Despite it being her first full-fledged role, she received positive attention for her solid character portrayal and delicate acting.
“It's amazing that I debuted in 2015 and am now working as an actress in 2025. Including my trainee years, I spent 10 years at my former company. When my contract ended in 2022, I was 26, and now I'm finally debuting as an actress. It's my 10th anniversary, but it feels like I'm starting from scratch, as if I'm taking the first step again. Ten years used to feel like a long time, but now I think a lot about my early debut days. I even recall my trainee memories. I did many interviews here and there like before, only difference is back then, I was accompanied with the members, but now, I'm all alone. It really feels like starting fresh.”
On why she decided to become an actress, Jiho said, “Actually, my dream in elementary school was to be an actress. Then in middle school, while studying at a reading room, I listened to a lot of music and was deeply moved by its power. That's when I dreamed of becoming a singer who could offer comfort through music. Toward the end of my group activities, I remembered something my mom had said. She had opposed me of becoming an idol because she was afraid I'd miss out on age-appropriate experiences. So this time, I thought I should try things that fit where I am in life.”
“When my contract ended, I was 26, the age when most of my peers were graduating and job hunting. I wondered if I could let go of everything I had built and start from zero. Of course, with my background, it's not exactly zero, but I was afraid of starting anew. Still, I thought it's best to take these kinds of risks while I'm young so I'll be able to endure future hardships too. That gave me courage”, she revealed.
The two years after leaving the group weren't easy. “The biggest thing was feeling sorry toward fans. I made them wait so long. Honestly, I didn't expect them to wait. Since it was my decision, I had to take full responsibility and planned to start over. But then there were still people welcoming me, saying, ‘Jiho is here!’. It felt surreal. I never truly saw myself as a celebrity, but one time, a fan I randomly ran into on a bus said, ‘I’m still cheering you’. I was so touched.”
During her hiatus, Jiho spent time getting to know herself. “I debuted in my teens and was so busy that I never had time to reflect. With time available, I started asking basic questions like, ‘What kind of person am I?’ and ‘What do I like?’. I realized I'm shy and that I love fashion. A year in, I started worrying, ‘What if I can't do this?’ But I believed that the only way to fail was to give up. So every time I got anxious, I pulled myself together. I'm the only one who can change my outcome, so I had to focus.”
#️⃣ Gong Jiho shares gratitude for Oh My Girl members' support and fans' love after transitioning from singer to actress.
Jiho mentioned that the Oh My Girl members showed warm support after watching 'Buried Hearts'. “We don't comment on every detail, but we always send each other supportive messages. Seunghee unnie and Hyojung unnie told me I did well. I also told Seunghee unnie, ‘You were amazing in 'Jeongnyeon'. You worked so hard.’”
Oh My Girl recently released a 10th-anniversary single titled 'Oh My', and they will hold a solo concert on April 19–20 at Olympic Hall in Seoul. Jiho said, “The song is really good, so I sent them a congratulatory message. I might not be able to attend the concert because of scheduling, but I definitely wanted to say congratulations. I told Hyojung unnie, ‘Sincerely, congratulations!’”
When asked about her mindset as she begins anew under the name 'Gong Jiho' as an actress, she said, “Now that I'm out in the world alone, I have to carve the path by myself. That naturally leads me to meet more people and make efforts to connect with others. Through that, I'm learning and discovering a lot about myself.”
As for her goal as an actress, she said, “I'm not sure about reaching a ‘peak’, but I want to become an actor who is remembered by their character names rather than my real name. I want to be someone who is remembered through roles.”
Finally, to her beloved fans, “Even though I'm full of doubts and easily shaken, your unwavering support is helping me become a warmer person. I will work hard to become someone worthy of all the love and encouragement you have given me.”
