Philadelphia has 226 school buildings. The average one is more than 70 years old. Some are over a century old.
Sixty three of them still don't have adequate air conditioning.
That means classrooms hitting the high 90s in September. It means schools sending kids home early during heat waves. In 2024, sixty three schools dismissed students early within days of the year starting.
It also means teachers turning down jobs. One principal said she'd lost hires who simply didn't want to work in a building that hot.
Fixing it isn't as simple as buying window units. Most of these buildings can't handle the electrical load. Rewiring one costs between $1 million and $1.5 million.
Jalen Hurts started chipping at it in 2024 with $200,000, which put more than 300 air conditioners into ten schools and reached about 5,500 kids.
Then he made it a season-long thing. Five thousand dollars of his own money for every touchdown he scored. They called it TDs for ACs. He was past $100,000 by Week 10.
A hot sauce company saw it and matched him.
This week his foundation announced its largest gift yet. Six hundred thousand dollars toward a full HVAC system at Northeast High School, the biggest high school in the city.
"We started this work as a foundation because no child should have their education cut short by the heat."
Here's the part almost nobody knows.
None of this started when he got famous or rich.
As a rookie in Philadelphia, Hurts saved almost his entire salary. What he did spend, he spent on three things.
He paid off the used car he'd bought in college. He paid for renovations on his family's home. And he gave away more than $60,000 to charity, including to a family in Nottingham whose eight year old had a rare cancer.
Then he took $70,000 and put it aside for his younger sister's college tuition.
He didn't tell her. He didn't tell their parents either.
Five years later he's the highest paid player at his position and he's writing checks for HVAC systems in buildings older than his grandparents.
The city's goal is to have every school properly cooled by 2027.
