Dr @ShahMeenesh, Chairman, NDDB, participated in the panel discussion titled ‘Innovation to Impact: Building India’s Agrifood Systems for Tomorrow’ at the World Food Day 2026 event organised by @FAO, @IFAD and @WFP. He highlighted the role of dairying in ensuring nutritional security and sustaining the livelihoods of millions of rural farmers. He noted that India, as the world’s largest milk producer, has a predominantly smallholder dairy system and a large bovine population.
Dr Shah stressed the need for climate resilient approaches to mitigate the challenges of methane emissions from animals while sustaining and enhancing farmers’ incomes. In this context, he outlined NDDB’s initiatives, including the Ration Balancing Programme, which reduces feeding costs, improves milk productivity and lowers methane emissions. He also spoke about developing a manure value chain through farmer level biogas plants that meet household cooking needs, along with centralised compressed biogas (CBG) plants that meet the energy needs of dairy processing plants and vehicle mobility while producing organic fertiliser. This creates additional value for farmers while addressing climate challenges.
On sustaining India’s leadership in milk production, Dr Shah identified breeding, nutrition and health as the three equally crucial pillars of animal productivity. He emphasised that higher animal productivity would mean more milk from fewer animals, thereby addressing sustainability. He referred to advancements in scientific breeding, including artificial insemination, sex sorted semen technology and genomic chips, along with interventions in animal nutrition and health.
Addressing the challenges across the dairy value chain, Dr Shah underscored the importance of building farmers’ trust through fair, transparent and digitally enabled milk procurement systems. He also stressed an efficient cold chain from procurement to consumer to maintain milk quality and better energy and operational efficiency in dairy processing plants.
The panel also included Dr Sweety Behera, Director, @fssaiindia; Ms Monu Jain, Partner (Credit), @AavishkaarVC and Dr Vivek Kumar, Head, Centre for Rural Development and Technology, @iitdelhi. The session was moderated by Mr James Marc de Sousa Shields, Country Director and Representative, IFAD.
