My two cents of unsolicited advice to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing to share my personal view on what Somalia needs to avoid a deeper crisis. This is not a partisan appeal; it is a sincere call to put the country’s future first.
You should stop treating your political opponents as your enemies. The prolonged confrontation with them has weakened your government and deepen the divisions facing the country. Your priority now should be to prevent Somalia from sliding further into crisis.
Do not expect the opposition to welcome this late invitation dated October 25, 2026. It will most likely be rejected. You had an opportunity to open serious dialogue months ago, but that opportunity was wasted.
The opposition knows, as does the international community, that your political position is increasingly fragile and your room to maneuver is limited. You can no longer expect to dictate the terms. If dialogue is to have any chance, accept the opposition’s conditions for reaching an agreed political and electoral process, and negotiate in good faith toward an arrangement all sides can accept.
Be pragmatic and face reality. You have few allies left. You have served as president twice over nearly a decade. Do not wait until your political downfall is inevitable before you act. Act now to save Somalia, prevent further division, and leave office with dignity, leaving your successor a country that is not burdened by an even deeper crisis.

Mudane Madaxweyne,
Waxaan warqaddan kuugu soo gudbinayaa aragtidayda gaarka ah ee ku saabsan waxa Soomaaliya looga baahan yahay si looga hortago in xaaladdu sii xumaato. Baaqani ma aha mid siyaasadeysan; waa codsi daacad ah oo ku saabsan in danta mustaqbalka dalka laga hormariyo wax kasta oo kale.
Waa inaad joojisaa inaad mucaaradkaaga u aragto khatarta ugu weyn ee hoggaamintaada. Iska horimaad joogto ah oo aad la gasho waxay wiiqdey dowladnimadaada, waxayna sii fogeeysey kala qaybsanaanta dalka ka jirta.
Mudnaantaadu hadda waa inay noqotaa sidii looga hortagi lahaa in Soomaaliya ay gasho xaalad ka sii daran.
Ha filan in mucaaradku soo dhoweyn doono casuumaaddan dambe oo aad dirtey October 27, 2026. waxay u badan tahay inay diidaan. Waxaad fursad u haysatay inaad bilo ka hor bilowdo wadahadal dhab ah, balse fursaddaas waad lumisay. Mucaaradka iyo beesha caalamkuba way og yihiin in mowqifkaaga siyaasadeed sii wiiqmayo, isla markaana fursadda aad wax ku maareyn karto ay kooban tahay. Mar dambe ma filan kartid inaad adigu shuruudaha oo dhan dejiso. Haddii wadahadalku fursad yeelanayo, waa inaad aqbashaa shuruudaha mucaaradka ee lagu gaari karo hannaan siyaasadeed iyo doorasho oo la isku raacsan yahay, dabadeedna si daacad ah uga gorgortantaa heshiis ay dhinacyadu wada aqbali karaan.
Xaqiiqada wajaho oo si waaqici ah u fakar. Xulafo kooban ayaad leedahay. Waxaad madaxweyne soo noqotay laba jeer, muddo ku dhow toban sano. Ha sugin ilaa ay guuldarradaada siyaasadeed lama huraan noqoto ka hor intaadan tallaabo qaadin. Hadda u dhaqaaq sidii aad Soomaaliya u badbaadin lahayd, uga hortagi lahayd kala qaybsanaan hor leh, xilkaagana sharaf ugu wareejin lahayd, si aanu qofka kaa dambeeya ugu dhaxlin dal ay dhibaatooyinku sii bateen.

What a tragic and deeply saddening situation. My condolences to the families and loved ones of the Somali National Army troops who lost their lives. Many widows, orphans, and parents are now mourning loved ones lost in an operation that could have been avoided.
It is not secret that Al-Shabaab effectively controls the Mogadishu–Baidoa road. Sending young soldiers along this dangerous route to Burhakaba has placed their lives at foreseeable risk. The president bears responsibility for the decision that placed these soldiers in harm’s way.
I listened to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s speech today, but I struggled to understand its purpose. Was he trying to insult the public’s intelligence, or has he become so disconnected from reality that he no longer sees what is happening in the country?
He spoke about the success of the election he recently held. Yet Somalis including people from his close circle do not consider it a genuine election; they see it as SELECTION
At a time when Uganda’s military forces are leaving Somalia and the renewal of the AUSSOM mandate is at risk, the president has offered no clear plan for addressing the country’s growing crises. He seems myopic and deaf to the concerns of the Somali people, focused instead on staying in power even if his authority reaches no farther than Villa Somalia.
I also listened to Sanbaloolshe’s interview. I found part of it offensive, undiplomatic dangerous, and deeply unsettling. It was like watching unhinged thrillers. Its implications deserve serious attention.
Uganda is pulling its Defense Forces, the UPDF, out of Somalia where they serve under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, AUSSOM. Other troop-contributing countries may follow, and this is a very dangerous move that risks a security vacuum as AUSSOM's mandate also ends in December 2026.
Reliable sources say the leaders of the TCCs are furious as Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has diverted the Somali National Army from its mission to secure the country and turned it against political opponents.
That decision reflects his stubbornness. He has refused to listen to partners, the opposition, or even his own security chiefs, surrounding himself only with those who tell him he is right as he pushes to remain in power at any cost.
In practice, he is allegedly using heavy weapons acquired after the arms embargo was lifted, plus drones and fighter jets, to target Somali citizens and opponents while Al-Shabaab advances unchecked.
For TCCs, there is no justification for their soldiers to die in Somalia so the president can stay in power.
This should be a wake-up call. The president must abandon his dream of holding power forever and focus on saving the country.
The Horn of Africa has been in conflict for decades. Fighting continues inside Ethiopia, and Somalia remains fragmented and politically unstable.
Ethiopia's claim of real economic concerns does not legally justify seeking sea access by force through Eritrea's Assab port or through any other port in the neighboring countries. Any such war will fail. It will only destabilize the region, cause massive human loss, and force many to flee their homes.
Under UNCLOS, landlocked states must negotiate access bilaterally. No country has the right to take a portion of the sea by force.
The 1998 to 2000 war between Ethiopia and Eritrea was disastrous and solved nothing.
War has never brought a permanent solution and should be avoided at any cost. A conflict in the Red Sea would be very costly, as it could spread to the entire region.
The countries of the Horn of Africa should unite to maintain their strategic relevance. Only with peaceful coexistence can these countries prosper.
Somalia’s opposition appears inconsistent as usual. Some political figures have criticized election procedures, yet congratulated a leader elected through a similar process. That raises a question: do they oppose the process itself, or only its outcome?
This is why dealing with Somali politicians can be so unpredictable. Positions seem to shift with political circumstances and interests. What is missing is a consistent, principled opposition, one that applies the same standards whether it wins or loses, and challenges an election process on principle rather than only when the result goes against it. Without that consistency, the opposition cannot be taken seriously as a principled force.
No side in this conflict can impose a lasting solution by force. Southwest State’s crisis is political and constitutional; further military escalation will deepen mistrust and division. Political rhetoric that inflames tensions and actions that escalate the conflict only make a peaceful resolution harder.
My call to all parties and to reasonable, forward-looking voices is to support inclusive dialogue and a credible, locally owned electoral process that all communities can trust.

Dhinacna xal waara kuma soo rogi karo xoog. Dhibaatada ka taagan Dowlad Goboleedka Koonfur Galbeed waa mid siyaasadeed iyo mid dastuuri ah; sii hurinta colaadda milatari waxay sii kordhinaysaa kalsooni darrada iyo kala qaybsanaanta. Hadallada siyaasadeed ee xiisadda hurinaya iyo tallaabooyinka colaadda sii ballaarinaya waxay sii adkaynayaan in xal nabadeed la gaaro.
Waxaan dhammaan dhinacyada iyo dadka caqliga suuban leh ee mustaqbalka fog eegaya ugu baaqayaa inay taageeraan wada-hadal loo dhan yahay iyo hannaan doorasho oo lagu kalsoonaan karo, ay dadka Koonfur Galbeed leeyihiin, bulshooyinkuna dhammaantood ku kalsoonaan karto.
It is absurd to expect a wolf to take good care of your goats. It goes against its very nature.
Likewise, it is absurd to expect politicians to hold power and not be tempted to abuse it or become corrupt. That is why power must never be left unchecked. It must be constrained by strong institutions, the rule of law, and accountability to the people.

Taas awgeed dawladnimada markasta waa in la xakameeya. Waa in lagu xakameeyo hay'ado xooggan, sharciga oo la ilaaliyo, iyo isla xisaabtan shacabka ah.
The president and his close associates must confront the realities facing Somalia and the region before it is too late. They have two options: continue down a path that could lead to the country’s collapse, or change course and help save it.
That choice begins with the electoral process: negotiate an approach accepted by all sides, or bear responsibility for the divisions that follow. A negotiated election can help avert further fragmentation; a unilateral one could deepen it.

Madaxweynaha iyo dadka ku dhow waa inay si dhab ah u wajahaan xaaladda ka jirta Soomaaliya iyo gobolka, inta aanay xaaladdu faraha ka bixin. Waxay haystaan laba mid in ay kala doortaan: inay ku sii socdaan waddo dalka u horseedi karta burbur, ama inay jihada beddelaan oo ay qaadaan tallaabooyin lagu badbaadinayo dalka.
Doorashadaas waxay ka bilaabataa habka doorashada: in laga wada xaajoodo hannaan ay dhammaan dhinacyadu ku qanacsan yihiin, ama in la qaato masuuliyadda kala qaybsanaanta ka dhalata. Doorasho lagu heshiiyey waxay ka hortagi kartaa kala qaybsanaan dheeraad ah; doorasho hal dhinac ahina way sii xumayn kartaa.
October 12 is Somali Flag Day, a time to reflect on the flag as a symbol of Somalia and its people. As political tensions deepen the country’s polarization, the flag remains one of the few symbols on which Somalis can still agree. Yet those disagreements have overshadowed its commemoration. Marking the day helps keep the flag’s meaning in public life. Happy Somali Flag Day

12-ka Oktoobar waa Maalinta Calanka Soomaaliyeed, waana maalin lagu milicsado calanka oo astaan u ah Soomaaliya iyo shacabkeeda. Iyadoo xiisadaha siyaasadeed ay sii xoojinayaan kala qaybsanaanta dalka, calanku weli waa mid ka mid ah astaamaha kooban ee ay Soomaalidu isku raacsan tahay. Hase yeeshee, khilaafaadkaasi waxay hoos u dhigtey xuska maalinta. Xuskeedu wuxuu gacan ka geysanayaa in macnaha calanku uu ka sii muuqdo nolosha guud ee bulshada. Hambalyo Maalinta Calanka Soomaaliyeed!
I will not address the legality of implementing the disputed constitutional provision that would bar Somali federal MPs from serving in the Cabinet. Instead, I will consider its practical relevance and implications. Over the past decade, more Cabinet ministers have been MPs than non-MPs.
There are at least two main views on this issue. Some believe that MPs serving in the Cabinet can strengthen the relationship between the legislative and executive branches. Others argue that the branches should remain separate. They point out that when MPs also serve as ministers, their Cabinet duties may keep them from parliamentary sessions, making it harder for Parliament to achieve a quorum. MPs are responsible for overseeing the executive. When they also serve in the Cabinet, their ability to scrutinize the executive and hold it accountable can be weakened, particularly when they are reviewing decisions in which they were involved.
The issue is also relevant to the quality of ministers. As ministers were increasingly selected from among MPs, the decline in ministerial quality became apparent; some appointees lacked the qualifications needed to lead a ministry.
In practical terms, implementing the provision would separate those responsible for running ministries from the MPs responsible for scrutinizing the executive. This could reduce conflicts of interest and strengthen accountability. It could also encourage appointments based on the qualifications needed to lead a ministry.

Ma doonayo inaan ka hadlo sharciyadda hirgelinta qodobka dastuurka ee lagu muransan yahay, kaas oo ka mamnuucaya xildhibaannada federaalka Soomaaliya inay ka mid noqdaan Golaha Wasiirrada. Balse waxaan doonayaa inaan eego muhiimadda iyo saamaynta uu ficil ahaan yeelan karo. Tobankii sano ee la soo dhaafay, waxay u muuqataa in wasiirro badan oo Golaha Wasiirrada ka tirsanaa ay xildhibaanno ahaayeen marka loo eego wasiirradii aan xildhibaannada ahayn.
Arrintan waxaa laga qabaa ugu yaraan laba aragtiyood oo waaweyn. Qaar waxay aaminsan yihiin in xildhibaannada ka mid noqda Golaha Wasiirradu ay xoojin karaan xiriirka u dhexeeya laamaha sharci-dejinta iyo fulinta. Qaar kalena waxay ku doodaan in labada laamood ay kala madax-bannaanaadaan. Waxay tilmaamayaan in marka xildhibaannadu wasiirro noqdaan, waajibaadkooda Golaha Wasiirradu ay ka maqnaan karaan fadhiyada Baarlamaanka, taasoo adkayn karta in Baarlamaanku helo tirada kooramka looga baahan yahay. Xildhibaannadu waxay mas’uul ka yihiin kormeerka laanta fulinta. Marka ay iyaguna ka mid noqdaan Golaha Wasiirrada, awooddooda ay ku kormeeraan laanta fulinta ugulana xisaabtamaan way daciifi kartaa, gaar ahaan marka ay dib u eegayaan go’aanno ay iyagu qayb ku lahaayeen.
Arrintani waxay sidoo kale la xiriirtaa tayada wasiirrada. Markii wasiirrada si isa soo taraysa looga soo xulanayay xildhibaannada, hoos u dhaca tayada wasiirradu si cad ayuu u muuqday; qaar ka mid ah dadka la magacaabay ma lahayn aqoonta looga baahan yahay hoggaaminta wasaarad. Ficil ahaan, hirgelinta qodobkani waxay kala saaraysaa dadka mas’uulka ka ah maamulidda wasaaradaha iyo xildhibaannada mas’uulka ka ah kormeerka laanta fulinta. Tani waxay yarayn kartaa isku dhaca danaha, waxayna xoojin kartaa isla xisaabtanka. Waxa kale oo ay dhiirrigelin kartaa in xilalka wasiirrada loo magacaabo dad leh aqoonta looga baahan yahay hoggaaminta wasaarad.

This is Colonel Moalin Mohamed, known as Tuute, a veteran Somali Marine. After the Somali government collapsed in 1991, he remained in the abandoned Somali Embassy building 26 Rue Dumont D’Urville in Paris for more than 25 years. He had served as Somalia’s Deputy Military Attaché and later as Military Attaché during the regime of Siyad Barre.
Fearing that squatters might take over the building and important embassy documents could be lost, Colonel Tuute chose to stay. He lived in a small room without hot water and received no salary. Through those difficult years, he endured hardship to protect the embassy property and records for the Somali people.
His sacrifice deserves recognition. I hope that one day Somali authorities will honor him as one of the Somalis who helped safeguard the nation’s property during one of its most difficult periods.
I last met Colonel Tuute in Mogadishu in 2024. Even then, he remained devoted to serving his country with pride. Sadly, he is now ill. He deserves our prayers, respect, and gratitude.

Kani waa Gaashaanle Sare Moalin Mohamed, oo loo yaqaan Tuute, halyeey ruug-cadaa ee ka tirsan ciidanka Badda ee Somalia. Ka dib markii ay dowladdii Soomaaliya burburtay 1991, wuxuu in ka badan 25 sano ku degana dhismaha Safaaradda Soomaaliya ee ku taal 26 Rue Dumont D’Urville, Paris oo cidla looga tegay. Wuxuu xilligii taliskii Siyaad Barre soo noqday ku-xigeenka u qaabilsanaa arrimaha milatariga ee safaaradda, dabadeedna noqday sarkaalka milatariga ee safaaradda.
Isagoo ka baqayay in dadka Homeless-ka oo af ingriisiga loo yaqaano Squatters ay la wareegaan dhismaha, isla markaana ay lumaaan dukumentiyada muhiimka ah ee safaaradda, ayuu Gaashaanle Tuute go’aansaday inuusan ka tegin. Wuxuu ku noolaa qol yar oo aan lahayn biyo kulul, mushaharna ma qaadan jirin. Sannadahaas adag, wuxuu u adkaystay duruufo qallafsan si uu hantida iyo diiwaannada safaaradda ugu ilaaliyo shacabka Soomaaliyeed.
Dadaalkiisa iyo naf-hurnimadiisu waxay mudan yihiin in la aqoonsado. Waxaan rajaynayaa in maalin maalmaha ka mid ah ay dowladda Soomaaliya ku maamuusi doonto inuu ka mid yahay Soomaalidii ka qayb qaadatay ilaalinta hantida qaranka xilli dalka soo marayay marxaladihii ugu adkaa.
Markii iigu dambaysay ee aan la kulmo Gaashaanle Tuute waxay ahayd Muqdisho sannadkii 2024. Xilligaasna weli wuxuu dalkiisa ugu adeegayay sharaf iyo waddaniyad.
Nasiib darro, hadda G/Sare Tuute wuu xanuunsan yahay. Wuxuu mudan yahay ducadayada, ixtiraamkayaga iyo mahadnaqayaga.

During my tenure as Somalia's Ambassador to the EU, in April 2014, Foreign Minister Abdirahman Beyle arrived in Brussels as head of the advance team before the arrival of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for the 4th EU-AU Summit. This was his first trip overseas since he was just nominated, and it was the first time I had ever seen him.
Since I was also non-resident Ambassador to France, I decided to take him to Paris for the weekend. The reason for the trip to Paris was to show him firsthand the deteriorating conditions of the two Somali diplomatic buildings in Paris.
Somalia had two diplomatic buildings in Paris. One is the Chancery located near the most famous street in Paris, the Champs Elysees. The other is the Ambassador's residence located at the outskirt of Paris in Vacinet, twenty minutes away from the Embassy.
For the entire train ride, we spoke about Somalia's unfortunate situation and how the country has collapsed because it has no leaders willing to defend it. He was telling me about the nationalist songs he had written himself. I was really impressed with the man. I thought to myself, this is a rare principled man. This man will serve the nation well.
We were picked up by Ahmed Shire, one of the diplomats, and drove straight to our embassy in Paris, a building that had been left in total ruin. The moment we walked in, Dr Beyle placed his hands on the crumbling wall and broke down in tears. I was overcome with emotion and my own tears began to flow. It touched me emotionally in a deep way.
A man nicknamed Tuute, the Military Attache who had lived in that building since 1991 to guard it and save all the diplomatic documents from being stolen or destroyed, looked at my tears and said to me, this man is a con artist. Do not trust him. I told him, do not judge him. This is a true patriot.
I was wrong. Tuute was right.
The man who wept over the ruins of our embassy now campaigns over the division of the country itself.
