Political theatre cannot produce peace. Elections cannot replace legitimacy.
While the #Ethiopian regime celebrates the June 2026 elections as a democratic success, the reality is that many of the country’s major political stakeholders have rejected, boycotted, suspended participation in, or lost confidence in the current political framework. No amount of election rhetoric, development propaganda, or official declarations can hide the deepening crisis of legitimacy facing the Ethiopian state. Ethiopia needs a genuine and inclusive political settlement—not another managed political exercise.

Press Release
September 9, 2025
Jigjiga, Somali State (Ogaden)
On September 8, 2025, four senior members of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) were detained in Jigjiga by a team led by Nur Muxumed Mxamud
#UNPO Secretary‑General Mercè Monje Cano sends heartfelt congratulations to #ONLF on its anniversary—celebrating the Ogaden people’s resilience, dedication to peace, and enduring pursuit of dignity and self‑determination.
ONLF is a proud member of UNPO—the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization—a global network that plays a vital role in empowering ONLF and other unrepresented nations to advocate for their human rights, democratic governance, and self‑determination on the world stage.
What is UNPO?
Founded in 1991, UNPO brings together over 40 unrepresented and marginalized peoples worldwide.
The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) is the only international membership organization dedicated to advancing the rights of peoples and nations who lack meaningful representation on the global stage. It empowers groups—such as indigenous peoples, ethnic minorities, and unrecognized territories—to participate in political, cultural, and civic life via nonviolent, democratic means.
Established on 11 February 1991 in The Hague, UNPO works to safeguard fundamental rights—including the right to self‑determination—and to amplify voices that are frequently marginalized or excluded from mainstream international institutions like the UN .
UNPO is founded on five core principles that all member groups must uphold:
-Equal right to self‑determination
-Adherence to international human‑rights standards
-Support for democratic pluralism and rejection of intolerance
-Commitment to non‑violence
-Protection of the environment, delivering training, advocacy, and international solidarity to communities lacking meaningful representation .
