My kids do sports and music at a decently high level, not because I want them to be professional athletes or musicians; I want them to be thinkers. They do sports and music for the same reason professional athletes profit from being multi-sport athletes as young kids.
As they grow older, the sports and music will fade away and what will be left is a well-rounded awareness of excellence that can be applied to their particular, more intellectual, community oriented pursuits.
