Drop Site’s @jeremyscahill reflects on his reporting on the Feb. 28 U.S. strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, Iran, which killed 156 civilians, including 120 children and 26 teachers. All 26 teachers killed were women, including one who was six months pregnant.

“When it’s our bombs that are dropped on children across the world, we know almost nothing about who was killed in these strikes.”

Scahill spoke with doctors, parents, teachers, survivors, and people who lost loved ones in the attack.

“Part of what we set out to do was to approach this story and say: Let’s hear what happened that day through the lens and perspective of the people who survived it and those who lost their loved ones that day.”

For more than two months, I have been working on a truly horrific story about one of the gravest war crimes committed by the United States since Vietnam: The bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, Iran. It was one of the first targets struck in the opening hours of the war on February 28, 2026.

At least 156 people were killed in the U.S. cruise missile strikes—120 of them were children and 26 were teachers. We spoke to survivors, first responders, parents, doctors, teachers, psychologists, and other witnesses. Some of them had never before shared their experiences of that day.

It would be impossible to do justice to what happened in Minab that day with words alone. In more than 25 years in journalism and reporting on war, I do not believe I have reported on a more heinous single crime.

🚨 “He was blown to pieces right before my eyes. His schoolbag was still on his shoulder.”

Israeli forces killed 14-year-old Palestinian student Mohammed Abu Hammad in a drone strike on Al-Baraka Street, south of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza shortly after he returned from school.

Mohammed had stopped at his father's shop to look after it while his father ran an errand. “He hadn't even been sitting in the chair for five minutes,” Ahmed Muhareb told Drop Site's Mohamed Ahmed. “They fired a missile at the boy, while his schoolbag was still on his back.”

At the hospital, people held up Mohammed's bloodstained schoolbag and notebooks, pointing to the shrapnel that had pierced them. His father wept over his son's body. “I swear, I was just talking to him,” he cried. “Mohammed was the one I depended on.”

“This is a child. What did he do wrong?” Mohammed's sister, Malak Abu Hammad, said. Questioning the ceasefire, she asked, “Do they even know God, to be talking about a ceasefire?”

“Is it not enough that you've forced us to live in tents? You've forced us to live in hunger and poverty. Why are you killing us?” Muhareb asked.

Several other students were wounded in the attack, which also killed another Palestinian, the Palestinian Ministry of Education said. At least six Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since Saturday morning.
