On 1 March 1999, Lutheran World Federation worker Strover Mutonhori arrived at the Omadu Hotel in Kezi, Matabeleland South, after being called to attend a workshop despite being off duty.

Rumours had spread that he was having an affair with Tambudzani Mohadi, the wife of senior ZANU-PF politician Kembo Mohadi. Days earlier, Mohadi had invited him to a meeting at Harare’s Ambassador Hotel, but he declined.

As the workshop ended, delegates returned to their rooms. Although they had been allocated accommodation in pairs, he was placed alone.

The following morning, his bed had not been slept in. His suitcase, clothes, money and mobile phone were still in the room.

Only he was gone.

For almost six months, his family searched while CID detectives retraced his final movements, questioned witnesses and followed leads into South Africa until 17 August 1999, when his decomposed body was found at Whitewaters Range in Matopos, near Bulawayo.

The investigation appeared to be closing in on answers before the docket disappeared, evidence was tampered with and the investigation was smothered without a single conviction.

On 25 August 2002, Mohadi became Minister of Home Affairs, placing him in charge of the ministry responsible for the police as the investigation faded into silence.

Meanwhile, Ian Tatenda Mutonhori grew up without his father, in poverty and fear, while Mohadi rose through the ranks of ZANU-PF to become Vice President of Zimbabwe.

His family still awaits justice.
