My Ted Wheeler headcannon is that he's too lazy to be actively homophobic, so when Mike starts dating Will he's not a fan of the situation but he simply doesn't acknowledge it. He's okay with Will staying over and spending time with the family but he keeps referring to Will as "Mike's friend" and no one points it out either because they decide it's not worth it. Meanwhile, Will always makes silly personalised doodles and comics for all the Wheelers except Ted, because you know what? Will Byers might be an angel but Joyce didn't raise a pushover. He doesn't disrespect Ted but he doesn't make an effort towards him either.

Till one day when Mike and Will are visiting the Wheelers over Christmas break and Ted and Mike get into an argument. Later, Ted overhears Will pacifying Mike and trying to be the voice of reason, and in that moment he sees so much of himself in his stubborn son. But what really gets him is that he sees so much of Karen in Will. He realises that Karen and Will make the Wheeler men better versions of themselves and something inside him crumbles. Next day on Christmas morning, he hands Will his present to open first.

Nobody acknowledges it but everyone can sense that something has shifted. Ted spends the next few days extending mini olive branches, and when the boys are finally leaving on New Year's Day, Will slyly hands Ted a small piece of paper. It's a comic strip featuring Ted and Mike's fishing trip, one of Mike's fondest memories with his father from when he was 7 years old.

Ted keeps the paper hidden safely for about a month, and then says "fuck it" and frames it and proudly displays it in the living room. He starts referring to Will as "our Will" instead of "Mike's friend" and thinks he's being subtle, while everyone else exchanges sneaky smiles each time he does it.
