I have observed, these several past months, many persons who, in the lifetime of Sayed Hassan Nasrallah, could not be brought to agree with a single word he uttered, somewhat change their discourse.

At the time, they arrogantly deemed his convictions mere delusion, suspected his purpose, & were persuaded that he acted from self-interest, or worse, in the service of foreign interest. They thought much higher of their own judgment & of the judgment of those among whom they keep company, & not one among them could be persuaded to allow Sayed the recognition which was his due for the understanding he had awakened millions, & for the extraordinary work he had, with his comrades, laboured so long to raise up.

What Sayed Hassan Nasrallah bestowed upon my generation, & upon those yet to come, will never be measured. I carry daily both the gratitude of having known his words while he was alive, & the pain of losing him. To discover such a man only after he has been taken from us, I believe, is never the same as to have while he breathed. & for having been spared this latter fate, I am eternally thankful.

Sayed lives within me in every hour. He is my light & my deepest grief together, a wound in me that no measure of time could close. He is a prophet, a gift bestowed upon mankind, & they took him from us in one cruel stroke, breaking in that same moment millions of hearts. Nature itself does not recover from such pain, the same way it cannot recover from their atrocities. Every day I renew the same vow, that he should live so long as my own blood continues to flow, & that this should be the greatest path within my power to walk.

I am comforted by his successor, Sheikh Naim, who has shown a wisdom & a courage equal, if not higher, to the occasion, & is himself, today, as misjudged by the world as Sayed once was. But the day will come, I know, when the truth shall be known to all.

A lifetime spent in gratitude to these men cannot suffice, but it is a fair beginning.
