I had never considered how social prestige could affect language but after watching this week's lecture it makes so much sense. I found it interesting that although subconscious language changes related to social prestige are less noticeable, they are more common. #eng211fall21
@alicia_gutowski i also enjoyed the quiz for this week! it reminded me a lot of accent challenges that used to be popular on the internet years ago. i ended up scoring similarly, with 44% Dixie.
One thing that stood out to me in this video is how earlier languages with no written records are able to be reconstructed through the systematic comparison of grammar, syntax, and basic vocabulary of various languages. #eng211fall21 https://t.co/cAuo5N2DF4
One of the differences between acquiring and learning a language is that acquisition often happens subconsciously, while learning takes conscious effort. #eng211fall21
In comparison to the theories regarding first language acquisition, I found the materials this week for second language acquisition to be much easier to digest and understand. #eng211fall21
@Aysiah189342931 I’ve personally struggled to make progress in learning other languages due to anxiety & self-efficacy issues. My main concerns are mispronouncing words or having people misunderstand what I’m trying to say. It’s hard for me to consider these mistakes as learning opportunities 😅
The concept of subtractive bilingualism made me think about how some children of immigrant families may end up losing their proficiency in their native language as they use it less and less in favor of developing their English language skills. #eng211fall21
When children are in the process of learning another language, it is important to encourage them to continue speaking in their native language as well. Doing this can help build their common underlying proficiency and maintain steady progression in L2. #eng211fall21
@delirium178 I can totally relate to this. One of the hardest things is when you think you’ve found a good source, but once you start reading it you realize that you need to find a better alternative 😅
@KathrynBuckels This is a great trick! I also try to create a rough outline of my paper before delving into research just to make finding sources a little bit easier.
@BKSmith210 I also struggle with writing with papers. I think that taking it one step at a time and starting research early definitely helps, rather than trying to do everything at the same time.
I had just submitted an annotated bibliography for another class last week so I am pretty familiar with its format. However, picking the right sources always seems to be the most overwhelming part 🙃 #eng211fall21
I can’t imagine believing that there is a language without grammar. In order to effectively communicate with and understand others, languages require rules that guide their speakers. Without grammar, there is essentially no language. #eng211fall21
While semantics involves looking at meanings of words and phrases extracted from language users, pragmatics examines how words and phrases are used in various contexts and how people assign meaning to them. #eng211fall21
Social media is often regarded as being 'harmful' to the language skills of youth populations. For my research paper, I plan to explore how social media is used by students learning English as an additional language. Particularly, I plan to focus on how social media use can be +
As I was brainstorming for topics for the final, I thought of doing my paper on how social media can be a beneficial tool and medium for those who are learning English as a foreign language. Depending on how many sources I can find, I might end up writing about it! #eng211fall21
Picking topics for research papers has always been hard for me. Some things I've brainstormed so far are how language anxiety manifests in ESL learners, how social media impacts language use in American teens, or how gender & language interact in social contexts. #eng211fall21
