Dear @AbirAlsahlani,
Because you stood up against the racism voiced in our hemicycle by far-right members, you have yourself become the target of a shameful attack. The comment saying that you should “go home” is not a political disagreement. It is a racist insult. It is a brutal attempt to deny your place, your voice, and your legitimacy as a European representative.
I want you to know, personally and unequivocally, that we stand with you. You are stronger than the vile racism expressed by this ECR member. Abir, your courage, dignity, and determination honor our Parliament every single day. You know how deeply we support you and how proud we are to have you among us in @RenewEurope. And beyond our political family, millions of Europeans are proud to have you as their representative: a woman who never bows her head in the face of hatred.
There are moments when silence becomes an accomplice. This is not one of those moments. We will not look away, we will not move on, and we will not allow this to be brushed aside as just another comment. We draw a line here. We will leave no stone unturned in demanding accountability and are therefore writing to @EP_President today, asking for sanctions. Racism has no place in our institutions, and those who spread it must face the consequences of their actions.
You are not alone in this fight. We are at your side, today and every day.
With all my friendship, admiration and solidarity.
This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. We should be able to find common ground in opposing rape. Here's a gift link to the article: https://t.co/aMMHId49OO

A huge honour for me today to have been elected as Chair of the @EP_Development Committee (DEVE) in the European Parliament. The first time since 1987 that an Irish MEP has chaired a standing committee in the EP.
Throughout my career, I have been a steadfast advocate for sustainable development, human rights, and economic growth. These values are at the core of my legislative work and public advocacy. I am passionate about addressing global inequalities and ensuring that development efforts are inclusive and sustainable.
At a time of such global insecurity, I feel that our commitment to eradicating poverty, helping those in dire need and improving our relations with developing countries is more important than ever.
I very much look forward to getting to work as chair of this committee and I want to thank my colleagues in @fiannafailparty, in @RenewEurope and from across all groups for trusting me with this position.
🗳️ ELECTED - @BarryAndrewsMEP elected Chair of the Committee on Development, by acclamation.
MEP Barry Andrews (Renew Europe, Ireland) will serve as the Chair of the European Parliament’s Development Committee for the next two and a half years.
Incredibly honoured to be re-elected to the European Parliament. Thank you to all who supported me throughout my campaign but most importantly, thank you to each and every one of you who voted for me. I look forward to representing Dublin in Europe for the next five years. 🇪🇺
I thought that seeing bus drivers wave at each other was the biggest high I could achieve but I've just seen the driver of a Brennan's bread van wave at a man walking down the street who was carrying a loaf of Brennan's bread and the rush was euphoric.
