Day 23 of ‘The Angels of Englemere Wood’ advent calendar.
At Englemere Wood, special events came and went, with memories of rationing, cramped classrooms, hikes around Windsor Great Park and letter writing sometimes blurring over the years.

She had spent weeks tortured by the disappearance of her eldest son John during the British Expeditionary Force’s retreat from Dunkirk and had only recently discovered he was a prisoner of war. There’s little doubt the Queen wanted to help the best way she knew how.

Even before the war, working class families had struggled to clothe their children adequately. Englemere Wood girls benefitted from Red Cross parcels dispatched from Canada and America, containing new or nearly new clothes in robust cotton.

As Christmas draws near, it’s day 22 of ‘The Angels of Englemere Wood’ advent calendar.
At Englemere Wood, the girls counted their blessings. While they were parted from parents and families, they felt safe in the care of Dorothy Peyton and Matron Bailey.

And in some ways, they were indeed more fortunate than most. Evacuation did not bring heartbreak for them, as it had for others, as they had already spent months or years away from their family homes.
