#fashinclusivity19#FashioningInclusivity2019 @KadianGosler & @A_H_Tay great quality of speakers and range of discourses on inclusivity, exclusivity, and marginalisation across fashion/textiles genre opens up even more questions
It’s been a fascinating and thought provoking day. Thanks very much to all of our speakers for sharing their research and starting some interesting discussions. This is your #FashioningInclusivity2019 live-tweeter signing off and handing you back to the event organisers.
Poage’s research looks at taking a more inclusive approach to sportswear design. Many of the issues raised in interviews could lead to solutions that would benefit a broader range of people than just the study participants. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Next @JennPoage speaks about @OpenStyleLab. She explains the difference between adaptive design (targeted to a specific user group) and inclusive design (expanding the target market to include a wider range of consumers). #FashioningInclusivity2019
Adaptive apparel is a phrase used to describe clothing designed with physical impairment in mind. Participatory design refers to clothing designed *with* the users rather than *for* them. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Our final speaker of the day is @JennPoage with a paper entitled ‘Applying Collaborative Methods to Design Sportswear for People with Upper Limb Impairment'. #FashioningInclusivity2019
After finding our about intentionally restrictive clothing for older people with dementia and kids with ADHD, Fowles is now working on an inter-generational project where children are designing fiddle blankets for dementia sufferers. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Fowles looked at new ways of getting dressed, of applying clothes to the body. She trialled ‘snap band’ style sleeves and pulley systems with zips, with good feedback on how user friendly the solutions were. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Observing her grandfather in physiotherapy rehabilitation, Fowles noticed the uniformity of the participants’ clothing and how inappropriate it was for the task at hand. It had been chosen purely due to ease of dressing. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Davis-Bonnick collaborated with the RNIB on tactile blocks for use when pattern cutting. She explains the bioecological model of inclusive HE, which places the learner with the disability at the centre of the learning environment. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Visual impairment is any condition affecting vision that cannot be corrected by glasses. Davis-Bonnick shares an interview with a visually impaired BA Fashion Contour student, explaining how her condition affects her studies. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Davis-Bonnick has been teaching pattern cutting at LCF for 22 years. After teaching a blind man how to drape on the stand, she started looking at ways to make her teaching less ocular-centric and more inclusive for those with visual impairments. #FashioningInclusivity2019
First up is Claudette Davis-Bonnick, speaking on ‘Inclusive learning-Exploring processes of teaching & learning for students with visual impairment studying creative arts disciplines in higher education'. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Another three excellent presentations. The Q&A discussion is fascinating... speaking about AI and how a design process focused on marginalised women can benefit all. #FashioningInclusivity2019
Chinoiserie is “Chinese-style stuff” consumed by European market. Its history is intricate; Chinese diaspora developed Chinese fashion and art, but there are numerous cases of appropriation at the level of European large fashion houses @A_H_Tay @fashinclusivity@ResearchUAL
Looking at everyday clothing, ideas of gendered ethnic identity... the development of garments such as the cheongsam, gradually inspired by form fitting silhouettes of the West with more variation than most people expect. #FashioningInclusivity2019
