Hot off the press from @Umass_birdphys lab and the first chapter of my dissertation at #UMassOEB@CNS_UMass. Migratory songbirds can selectively increase key digestive enzymes to aid in refueling during migratory stopover. Here’s how! (Thread)

Caught Fischer Sand and Gravel still working the border wall yesterday (3pm-dusk) at the edge of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge west of the Pajarita Wilderness. Here an excavator continues prepping the blasted slopes of a mountain on day 2 of the Biden Administration
By selectively sparing the digestive enzymes necessary to assimilate protein, birds maintain optimal digestion even though total intestine size is decreased after flight, allowing birds to refuel quickly so they can continue their incredible journeys!

We've found:
1) White-throated sparrows can rapidly increase an enzyme responsible for protein digestion (Aminopeptidease-N) two-fold over base line levels during refueling.
2) Increasing AP-N allows birds to rebuild fat and lean mass in as little as 48h(!)
So it happened. The @ForestService gave their final green light for the land transfer of sacred Oak Flat to mining giant & Indigenous lands violator @RioTinto today. The theft of Apache holy ground seems imminent but the resistance, both legal & spiritual, is fighting back hard.
