Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Sinjar Genocide, during which thousands of Yezidis were massacred and kidnapped.
We are committed to preserving and documenting the difficult history Yezidis have endured.
For nearly as long as looms have been used to process natural fibers into wearable textiles, cultures have been identified by their clothing.
With technological advancements in the textile industry and the expansion of global trade networks, however, variety abounds in fabric and ready-to-wear options and many have abandoned their traditional dress for the sake of convenience and economy. This wasn't the case in the past.
Due to financial and political challenges, there were times when they had nothing to wear except Kurdish clothes made from fabrics woven by locals using century-old weaving machines. Though the fabric was labor-intensive to produce and itchy to wear, it was a saving grace in times of need.
Originally a product of necessity, these outfits have become a point of honor and individuality.

With a twinkle in his eyes and a wide smile, Mohammed Amin shows us some small, yellowing envelopes with four-digit numbers on them. These envelopes hold film he developed about 40 years ago in his photo studio. He quickly grabs his old notebook, with pages that were once white but are now tinged beige. “I will tell you their names right now. We were smart like that back in the day. We were computers,” Amin says, smiling. For over 50 years, he has held onto his notebook, tucked away in a drawer in his aging wooden desk, decorated with photos he took long ago.
Amin is an 84-year-old photographer from the city of Sulaimani in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He opened his photo studio in 1968, and ever since then, he has kept the studio open for six days a week.
Kak Mohammed was photographed by Sung Rae Cho with a Zeiss Ikon Nettar analog camera on Kodak Gold 200, the same camera he used back in the 1960s.

The KCAC team recently visited the Jemal Nebez Foundation in Berlin, where they were warmly welcomed by their founder, Dr. Hannelore Küchler, and their librarian, Raman Salah.
Jemal Nebez (1933 – 2018) was a Kurdish polymath known for his contributions to linguistics, mathematics, politics, and literature. The Jemal Nebez Foundation serves as an archive for Jemal Nebez's writings, documents, and collections, preserving both contemporary works and historical materials.
We were honored to have the opportunity to exchange ideas with them and discover common ground for future collaboration.
