We Have Won! No one can use ‘ORS’ on their label unless it’s a WHO-recommended formula.
This is the story of Dr. Sivaranjani Santosh, a braveheart paediatrician from Hyderabad, who fought for 8 years against sugar-rich drinks falsely marketed as ORS.
Her persistence led to FSSAI’s landmark order, protecting children and patients from misleading claims.
“These drinks had 10x the sugar WHO recommends, worsening diarrhoea and complications in millions of kids,” she explains.
This victory is not just hers, but belongs to everyone who stood with her — doctors, advocates, parents, and citizens demanding truth in labeling.
Scroll down to see how her 8-year battle changed the game for public health and children across India.

Coffee, Energy Drinks, and Mental Health: What You Should Know
A new scientific review has examined how coffee and energy drinks relate to suicidal thoughts and attempts.
The findings are eye-opening:
✅Coffee in moderation may be protective.
People who drank about 2 or more cups a day had a lower risk of suicide attempts compared to those who rarely drank coffee.
❌Energy drinks showed the opposite trend.
Even one can a month was linked to a higher risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts. The more energy drinks consumed, the greater the risk.
Why does this matter?
✅Coffee mainly contains caffeine, which can boost alertness and mood when used sensibly.
❌Energy drinks, besides caffeine, are often packed with sugar and other stimulants. These can disturb sleep, increase anxiety, and place extra stress on the brain and heart, potentially worsening mental health.
What you can do?
✅If you drink coffee: Stick to moderation. One to three cups a day is generally safe for most adults. Avoid it late at night to protect your sleep.
▶️If you drink energy drinks: Cut back or avoid them. They offer no long-term health benefits and may increase risks for mood and mental health problems.
✅Prioritize sleep, stress control, and support. No drink can replace healthy habits.
▶️Seek help if needed. If you or someone you know has suicidal thoughts, please reach out to a doctor, counselor, or helpline immediately.
(Note: This study only showed an association, and does not prove causation. Further studies are needed to explain the underlying mechanisms too).

❓How can general public recognize cardiac arrest so that CPR can be quickly started?
➡️There are three cardinal features of Cardiac arrest.
1. Unresponsiveness
➡️The person is suddenly unconscious and doesn’t respond to shaking, calling their name, or shouting.
There is no movement, no eye opening, no verbal response.
2. No Normal Breathing
The person is not breathing at all, or only gasping (which is ineffective and abnormal).
3. No Pulse
If the person is trained, they can try to check for a carotid pulse (neck area).
BUT: For lay people, the focus should be on unresponsiveness and abnormal/no breathing—don't waste time searching for a pulse.
💥 START CPR IMMEDIATELY IF:
✅ The person is unresponsive,
✅ AND not breathing normally.
⛔️ Don’t wait to be 100% sure—it’s better to start CPR if in doubt. CPR won’t hurt someone who doesn’t need it, but not doing it when it’s needed can be fatal.
❓How to do CPR?
➡️Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
➡️Use both hands, straight arms, and compress at least 2 inches deep, at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
Don’t stop until:
➡️Professional help arrives
➡️An AED (defibrillator) is used
➡️The person starts moving or breathing normally

There has been a recent surge in people suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Pune, a serious neurological illness.
What is this illness?
➡️Symptoms of GBS
Acute onset, rapidly progressing weakness of legs and arms; tingling and pain in limbs
Breathing difficulty, requiring mechanical ventilator and ICU care, in severe cases
➡️What causes GBS?
It is a post-infectious neurological illness, and commonly follows a viral or bacterial infection. It can also occur after a vaccination.
Patients often report symptoms of a respiratory (fever, cough, runny nose) or gastrointestinal infection (stomach pain, loose stools) within the previous two weeks.
➡️How is GBS diagnosed?
Clinical features of rapid onset severe weakness of legs and arms should make one suspect GBS. Diagnosis can be confirmed by additional tests, such as nerve conduction studies and CSF analysis (lumbar puncture).
➡️How is GBS treated?
Treatment of choice is intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) injections or plasma exchange.
➡️How is the outcome after treatment?
More than 95% of people with GBS survive, if treatment is promptly started.
➡️In Pune, cases have been reported from same geographical regions. The organism identified in some cases is Campylobacter jejuni, which causes gastro-intestinal infection. A contaminated water or food source is being suspected. Investigations are ongoing.
