“A really cool behind-the-scenes thing is that Patrick has autistic family, so he's actually very well-versed in neurodivergence. I remember the first season especially, he was trying to figure out how, as a person who actually knows what they're doing, how to do it wrong. We would kind of discuss, okay, how would someone who knows none of this respond? How do you play clueless when you actually know it?

For Mel to have someone who's curious about her—and it's not that he gets her fully, but he wants to—that means the world. I don't have siblings, but Patrick always tells me, and apparently all of his friends have texted him and said, "Dude, she's just like your sister." Every day, Patrick will be like, "Oh my God, that's something my sister would do.”
