I can’t remember when it started, but for as long as memory serves me, I have been using my teeth to bite my nails!

A few days before my 40th birthday, I had a patient who sat on my exam table, and I noticed the nail beds.

They were red and swollen. I recognized the pattern. He must have been biting them hard with his teeth, worse than mine. I could tell. In him, I didn’t just see a bad nail bed. I saw the future of me if I kept at it.
So I made a pact. Once I turned 40, I’d stop it.

A month after my 40th birthday, I grew my nails out. My wife was shocked when she saw them (she has been complaining about nails in my mouth since she met me).
This morning I used a nail clipper to cut my own nails for the first time in my adult life. I was emotional.

This is probably irrelevant to you, but it was a struggle for me, and I’m glad I’m 35 days sober!!

I understand this is the internet, where everyone is perfect. This is my imperfection.

If you were in my shoes, you can do it too.
