The UK’s Online Safety Act is a draconian mess. It compels platforms to police legal speech, enable government censorship, and strip back encryption or face £18M/10% revenue fines.

Platforms must verify users’ ages with ID and biometrics. Not just for porn this affects forums, social media, even health sites. Privacy? Gone.

The kicker? Many of the MPs who passed this don’t even understand the tech they’re regulating. You can’t break encryption safely. That’s not a policy decision. It’s math.

End-to-end encrypted apps like Signal and WhatsApp may leave the UK if forced to comply. The law asks for the impossible and punishes platforms if they fail.

Sites offering suicide prevention, sexual health, LGBTQ+ support already being censored. Meanwhile, actual pro-suicide forums linked to 50+ deaths remain live.

Sites like Wikipedia are being hit with unworkable compliance burdens. Many are now blocking UK users.

With vague definitions of “harmful,” criminal liability for tech execs, and unchecked Ofcom powers, the Act incentivizes censorship at every level.

This isn’t child safety. It’s authoritarian policy by tech-illiterate lawmakers.
