Not sure why some players still don’t get it? And why is it so important to get? Because doing certain things around the “diamond” are a bad look. They scream “selfish”or “look at me,” or “poor team culture.” Fair or unfair, they just do.
They are also frowned upon by most recruiters and scouts. There is a time and a place for some of the following, but not when preparing to play a game or even at a team practice.
My opinion, of course….
But here are a few things to get….
- No headphones when stretching, throwing, taking BP, pre-game In/out, or during any other team activity. Save them for the bus.
- Crocks or sliders on your feet anywhere while you are preparing to compete. Cages, stretching, throwing, etc. Put cleats or turfs on as soon as you get inside the field and save the rest for the bus or hotel.
- Rolling shirt sleeves up into a make shift tank top during stretching, BP, In/out or game. Save that for the beach.
- Hanging around the ball field with your game jersey or undershirt untucked. Look like a player at all times at the ball park or take off your jersey until it’s time to put it on right.
- Wearing baseball pants without a belt. Again, look like a ball player and part of the team.
- Dugout team chants or chirping at opponents. This includes personal verbal attacks on anyone. Stay focused on your teammates. It’s that simple.
- Kneeling or sitting down on the field during mound visits or pitching changes. Are you really that tired and lazy you have to take a knee during the game?
- Talking to friends or parents outside the fence during the game. This should be obvious, but I still see it happen regularly. Stay focused on the game and winning.
- Sending parents or friends off to concessions during games. Be prepared with food and drink before the game starts.
- What did I forget?
