Three-minute hydration (ad) breaks in every match are an absolute game-changer. As FIFA explores this further, get ready for this format to heavily shape how we watch the World Cup in 2030 and 2034. Love them or hate them, hydration ad breaks are here to stay. #FIFAWorldCup
Global sports broadcasting has fundamentally changed. Hydration breaks aren't just for player safety anymore. Networks increasingly adopt American-style commercial breaks during live sports. We're watching the slow death of the continuous 45-minute half for ad revenue. #FIFA
For the first time at a FIFA World Cup™, hydration breaks have been introduced at all matches. The breaks take place in the 22nd and 67th minutes and last three minutes, which are added on to the stoppage time at the end of each half.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino explained today: “The main reason is the heat, but we also have to understand that in a competition like the (FIFA) World Cup, played over 39 days, with teams potentially playing eight matches in those 39 days, having a moment to rest is extremely important.
“What matters even more to us is ensuring that all teams, in every match, are playing under the same conditions. And it’s very difficult to accept that a coach might have the opportunity to influence a match by making adjustments simply because it’s hotter, while in another match, where the temperature is slightly lower, the same coach doesn’t have the same opportunity. We want to ensure equal conditions for everyone, and that’s why these breaks are implemented in every match.”
Mr Infantino said that FIFA gains “absolutely nothing” from the breaks. “There is no additional revenue for FIFA, as all commercial agreements were signed well in advance. So, this is not a financial issue for us. For us, it is purely a sporting matter.”

🇺🇦👏🏼A standing ovation and warm welcome as Vladyslav Heraskevych and his father enter the room to the Ukrainian Dinner gathering during the Munich Security Conference! There is no question about it, @heraskevych he is already a champion! 🥹
Remembrance is not a violation.
I met with Ukrainian skeleton racer and member of Ukraine’s National Olympic Team, Vladyslav Heraskevych, and his father, coach of Ukraine’s skeleton team, Mykhailo Heraskevych. I presented Vladyslav with the Order of Freedom.
Ukraine will always have champions and Olympians. But above all, Ukraine’s greatest asset is Ukrainians – those who cherish the truth and the memory of the athletes killed by Russia, athletes who will never compete again because of the Russian aggression.
Thank you for your stance, your strength, and your courage. Glory to Ukraine!
2. It's clearly not anymore about political expression, it's about all expressions. This is stunning, such an absolute ban would need very strong justifications to exist.

#CAS press rejects @heraskevych's application against the IBSF/IOC decision to disqualify him from the #Skeleton competition!
We have only a press release at this point but it contains some remarkable language 👇👇👇
#Heraskevych#IOC
Global Athlete condemns the @iocmedia morally reprehensible decision to ban @heraskevych from @milanocortina26.
This is not about “athlete expression guidelines.” This is about the IOC’s cowardly capitulation to geopolitical pressure and its shameful willingness to silence an athlete whose only offense was remembering the dead.

Ukrainian Skeleton athlete @heraskevych has been disqualified from #Olympic2026 for wanting to wear a memorial helmet.
It's not over yet, now a fundamental #Sportslaw fight starts before the #CAS, see my thread below on the next steps & key legal issues.

This is so utterly disgusting and sickening I truly have no other words for it!
Shame on @iocmedia shame on the @Olympics !! And for anyone, especially other athletes and sports associates, not outraged by this; shame on you too!

🚨IOC statement 1/3
Skeleton pilot Vladylsav Heraskevych not allowed to participate at Milano Cortina 2026 after refusing to adhere to the IOC athlete expression guidelines
Having been given one final opportunity, skeleton pilot Vladylsav Heraskevych from Ukraine will not be able to start his race at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games this morning. The decision followed his refusal to comply with the IOC’s Guidelines on Athlete Expression. It was taken by the jury of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) based on the fact that the helmet he intended to wear was not compliant with the rules.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has therefore decided with regret to withdraw his accreditation for the Milano Cortina 2026 Games.
Despite multiple exchanges and in-person meetings between the IOC and Mr Heraskevych, the last one this morning with IOC President Kirsty Coventry, he did not consider any form of compromise.
The IOC was very keen for Mr Heraskevych to compete. This is why the IOC sat down with him to look for the most respectful way to address his desire to remember his fellow athletes who have lost their lives following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The essence of this case is not about the message, it is about where he wanted to express it.
Я пропоную завершити цей скандал.
I propose to end this scandal.
——
I never wanted a scandal with the IOC, and I did not create it. The IOC created it with its interpretation of the rules, which many view as discriminatory.
Although this scandal has made it possible to loudly speak about Ukrainian athletes who have been killed, at the same time the very fact of the scandal distracts a tremendous amount of attention away from the competitions themselves and from the athletes participating in them.
That is why I propose to end the scandal.
I ask:
1. Lift the ban on the use of the “Memory Helmet”.
2. Apologize for the pressure that has been put on me over the past few days.
3. As a sign of solidarity with Ukrainian sport, provide electric generators for Ukrainian sports facilities that are suffering from daily shellings.
I very much hope for a response before the start of the skeleton competitions.
