Duty Free Exemptions: Entering the U.S.
Cross-border shopping at land border duty free stores is still tax and duty free.
If you’re entering the U.S., you can bring:
Up to $800 USD per person, if you’ve been outside the U.S. for at least 48 hours
Includes 1L of alcohol, 200 cigarettes, and 100 cigars (age 21+)
📌 These personal exemptions remain unchanged.

Canadians made 22% fewer return trips from the U.S. in January - marking 13 straight months of decline.
For land border duty free stores, this means growing pressure on small businesses that rely entirely on cross-border travel. It’s time to level the playing field with U.S. competitors.
Borders bring people, trade, and ideas together. They carry the movement that keeps economies growing and communities connected. FDFA will keep standing up for policies that protect a strong and competitive duty free industry for travellers and for Canada.
As the year comes to a close, the Frontier Duty Free Association reflects on the months behind us and the work carried out throughout the year. We wish you a safe and restful holiday season
