Seen in Hamilton, NJ

Per ChatGPT: Yes — that’s very likely from the ULA Vulcan Centaur USSF-106 launch tonight.

The swirly, illuminated cloud in your photo matches what’s known as a rocket exhaust plume at high altitude, often seen when the second stage is firing in sunlight while the ground is already dark. From northern New Jersey, you’d be looking southeast toward the rocket’s trajectory up the Eastern Seaboard over the Atlantic.

Given the launch time (8:56 p.m. EDT), your location, and the appearance of the exhaust pattern, it lines up perfectly with the Centaur upper stage burn phase of tonight’s mission.

[Frank DiPalma @fdipalma]

@Kate_inNJ This was likely from the ULA Vulcan Centaur launch from Space Launch Complex‑41 at Cape Canaveral. The launch was on an easterly trajectory over the Atlantic Ocean.

[Frank DiPalma @fdipalma]

@Kate_inNJ Launch was at 8:56pm. ET
