My stepdad was a manager in the subprime department of WaMu in 08. Went from making big bucks to not being able to find remotely comparable compensation. Was a very tough few years for our family.
My mom a few years prior had been working at a different mortgage company. She was making $200k + in her 20s couple decades ago when that was real money. She went to work in flip flops after taking me to school and left every day at 2pm to get me off the school bus. She simply fielded inbound demand calls. She always commented that this seemed unsustainable, but he never saw it coming.
Bubbles man
@aakashgupta The other factor that breaks it is prolonged job losses, rising insurance and property taxes, inflation. In some areas, property taxes and insurance can be over half your payment and are not fixed.
@jonbrooks We sold our 2.75% rate home. We moved to a different state and felt the price reflected our rate. Property taxes are still rising in our location and the school budget was ever growing (and somehow underfunded). We feel like the equity we had is better invested than rate benefit
@levelsio It was too expensive to cool a large room. bedrooms were seen as more important so you could sleep. A lot of people would just watch TV in their rooms. We’d all sleep in one bedroom when it was really hot.
@BowTiedGlobe I grew up in Rio, going to Teresópolis regularly. Teresópolis and Petrópolis are beautiful, but boring. Neither has great hospitals, you wind up going to Rio. Hard to travel. Galeão is 1.5-2h away and has lost a lot of flights.
