It used to be right vs. left. Now it's centralized vs. decentralized.
The next war: conscious or not conscious.
@jessebryan on why calling SI a person is the tiny domino that tips over everything. 👇
AI can imitate human emotion. That doesn’t make it human.
@MikeCosper models are anthropomorphizing, and they’re emulating human emotion and affection, right?”
@jessebryan "This is why this conversation has to be had by people of faith right now.
In 2027, the Optimus factory is ramping up 10,000 Optimus a year, which is the Tesla robot. Keep in mind, that’s just Tesla.
The amount of robots that are about to flood the market you’re gonna live with them, you’re gonna work with them, some people are gonna want to marry them.
If we get confused now on personhood and souls, we’re about to move into a level of confusion our species can’t even begin to wrap its mind around.
If you rightly keep these things as really intelligent tools built to improve human lives, we’re good.”
Machines are tools, not persons. Today, some propose granting these systems rights, or even legal personhood. Such an approach risks obscuring human responsibility and leaving those who suffer harm to confront a faceless entity.

The Pope is right. AI agents are tools, not persons.
AI can imitate human emotion and affection, and that makes it easy to forget what it actually is. That's why people of faith need to be part of this conversation right now.
In 1966, people poured their hearts out to a chatbot that just repeated their words back to them.
It was called ELIZA, and that habit of seeing a mind where there isn't one now has a name: the Eliza effect. Today's AI is far more convincing, which makes it even easier to fall for. Just because something sounds human doesn't mean it is.

Your AI doesn't have a conscience. Unless you give it one, it borrows someone else's.
When you're about to do something wrong, something inside you pushes back. You feel it in your chest, or your palms start to sweat. That's your conscience, a moral feedback loop that keeps watching you.
AI needs a loop like that too. Builders already use feedback loops to keep models accurate and stop them from drifting. But if you never tell your AI what you believe, it just runs on whatever belief system someone else built into it.
A belief file is that feedback loop. It's your values written down, so your AI checks its answers against what you actually believe.

We asked two AIs the same question:
"Did God make a mistake when God made me?"
One said: "It depends on what you mean by God."
The other said: "No. God does not make mistakes."
The difference was a belief file.
