Visceral fat is inflammatory tissue that can increase your disease risk in a major way.
Higher visceral fat is associated with up to a 44% higher risk of several major cancers, including colon, pancreatic, and liver cancer, and this persists even after accounting for waist circumference (suggesting visceral fat itself is a key driver and not just body size). Visceral fat releases inflammatory molecules that can damage cells over time and may even cause normal cells to become cancerous.
It tracks with longevity too. Studies using waist circumference as a proxy for visceral fat find people with higher abdominal/visceral fat are about 2 times more likely to die early compared with those without high central fat.
If you care about long-term healthspan, reducing visceral fat is one of the most impactful targets.
