Our hearts are with everyone on Kauaʻi in the aftermath of Hurricane Lowell. The Category 2 storm passed just 90 miles west of Līhuʻe, bringing catastrophic storm surge, wind gusts over 90 mph, and more than 20 inches of rain in some areas. Impacts were also felt across the islands — flooding, damaging winds, dangerous surf, and coastal inundation, especially along south- and west-facing shorelines.

Kauaʻi suffered extensive damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Downed trees and power lines have knocked out power to roughly 91% of the island, and many residents are also without water. If you're somewhere safe, please limit travel so repair crews can work. Treat every downed power line as live and stay clear.

As the community begins recovering, remember that stormwater carries sewage, animal waste, pesticides, and other chemicals into streams and waterways and down to the beach. The Hawaiʻi Department of Health has issued brown water advisories for Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, and parts of Maui and the Big Island to protect public health. Please heed all advisories and avoid swimming near streams and other freshwater outlets, as these locations are most likely to be affected by pollution after storms pass by.

🐒❤️ A tired proboscis monkey was spotted struggling to cross a river in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Then something unexpected happened.

Two fishermen noticed the exhausted primate swimming in the current and carefully brought their boat alongside it. The monkey climbed aboard, sat down like a regular passenger, and enjoyed a free ride across the river. 🚤😂

At one point, the impatient monkey even jumped off too early, only to climb back on and continue the journey. The fishermen eventually guided it safely to shore. The heartwarming video quickly went viral and earned praise across social media.

What makes the story even more fascinating is that proboscis monkeys are excellent swimmers and are known to cross rivers in Borneo, but river crossings can still be risky because of currents and predators such as crocodiles.
