Love and Deepspace has drifted away from the traditional story-driven otome framework and is rapidly turning into more of a celebrity-simulation game.

New cards are no longer about enriching the story, completing character arcs, or deepening immersion. Instead, they function as 'stage performances' for idol-chasing fans, who are expected to spend money dressing up their favorite character and then compete over sales numbers.

Even if the stories feel repetitive.. holidays, stumbling into some promotional event, deciding to hang out, a bit of fluffy flirting, then heading home to reminisce.. as long as the outfits look good, plenty of players are still willing to pay.

This misplaced priority, emphasizing costumes over story has badly damaged my gameplay experience. If a game truly wants to deliver immersion, it should let players feel a sense of belonging in the world it creates.

But the way Love and Deepspace is run now feels like this, I open the game, it shows me a portrait, and says, 'This is NPC XX, her role is your XX.' I say 'okay', and then we play along in a make-believe scenario we both know isn’t real. There’s no authenticity, only the hollow feeling of roleplaying with lines of code.

The problem is that this approach makes the game’s world feel empty. I don’t mean the large but barren sci-fi setting, I mean the world itself. The game knows the male leads are the selling point, so it spotlights them like idol solo stages (and then expects fans to push sales to prove their 'husband' is the most popular). It creates the illusion that only six people exist in this entire universe.

The ideal narrative rhythm should be a steadily advancing main storyline, with romance woven naturally throughout, not an endless flood of romance stories with only scraps of main plot scattered in between.

Yes, the romance with the male leads is the highlight, the 'cherry on top.' But you can’t just serve me a plate full of cherries. I need whipped cream, sparkling water, and salad as the foundation to truly appreciate the cherries. Love and Deepspace doesn’t provide that and in fact, it doesn’t even make its cherries all that well.

And I suspect there’s a reason for this. The moment the game dares to serve up any other 'appetizers', a portion of the player base immediately starts shouting that these side dishes are stealing screen time or story focus away from their idol.

So Papergames clearly knows it doesn’t have much real gameplay and isn’t willing to dig deeper. At the same time, it’s afraid of being mobbed by players, so it runs the game like a fandom, pitting players against each other to drown out the voices demanding more main story. This way, they can rake in money more efficiently, while water armies and blind stans keep pushing: urging people to spend, climb the charts, buy from the official store, boost numbers, an endless cycle for appearance's sake.
