Las uniones, por sus extremos, de varias barras en forma de aspa crean estructuras reticulares diversas dependiendo de la posición de los nudos intermedios en relación a sus extremos.
Una estructura reticular plegable se puede dividir en dos tipos: plana y espacial.
Será plana si, durante el plegado, conserva el paralelismo con el plano de referencia inicial.
Será espacial si dicho paralelismo varia durante el plegado.
Según F. Stüssi (1962), en una estructura reticular espacial se cumple la relación 3n = b + 6, donde n es el número de nudos y b el número de barras.
Ejemplo, en un icosaedro, que tiene 12 nudos y 30 aristas (barras), se cumple 3 x 12 = 30 +6
