In New York for the @UNIDIR board meeting and the @UN advisory board on #disarmament. Focus on transparency and confidence building, more needed than ever
🇨🇾🇪🇺 Federica Mogherini @FedericaMog, former Vice-President, European Commission & former High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, EEAS (2014–2019); former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy (2014), sets the scene at "A new strategy for #Peace and cooperation in the Mediterranean", the latest edition of #CallToEurope taking place in Cyprus.
🗨️"In this new decade of multilateralism and geopolitical shifts, the #Progressive approach is the common-sense approach.
Building narratives and perspectives grounded in #UN Charter values, including democracy and the rule of law, is the best way to serve our interests.
I conclude with a #CallToEurope - never underestimate the power we have as partners in Europe and the Mediterranean. Let’s use the power we have, including cooperation and diplomacy.”

After four weeks of intense negotiations at the 2026 #NPTRevCon, US-Iran relations are on my mind. It is no secret that differences over the [bracketed] paragraph that named Iran was the reason consensus failed to be reached. Ironically, now 48 hours later there are rumors of a US-#Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) being on the horizon. In this context, I'd like to re-flag the recent @ForeignAffairs piece that I wrote with the inimitable former EU foreign policy chief @FedericaMog on what meaningful, results-oriented diplomacy must entail based on the #JCPOA experience – especially as if news reports are correct, the nuclear file is being deferred into the future (yet again) https://t.co/xWu7PQBRtN

#CallToEurope will examine the geopolitical shifts affecting the region, including the urgent need for a just peace process that leads to a fair and sustainable solution between Palestine and Israel, as well as the responsibility of the European Union to actively condemn Israel’s illegal violations of international law and uphold the protection of Palestinian rights.🕊️
Participants will also reflect on the broader regional implications of the United States and Israel’s illegal war against #Iran and Lebanon, and the wider destabilising impacts on the Mediterranean region, as well as the democratisation struggles in North Africa. 🌍

I can’t think of a better choice than @JoaoCravinho for leading the @collegeofeurope in the years ahead! Students, academics and staff across campuses will find in you leadership, support, empathy, and vision. Bom trabalho!
Excellent speech by King Charles. So good to hear the clarion cry for Ukraine, for NATO, for nature and the environment, for democracy and the checks on power. JFK mentioned more than Trump. Starmer directly quoted. Europe mentioned several times. Vance looked ill. I loved it. Loved the confidence in British and European values
The victory of the opposition in Hungary yesterday, like the Polish election in 2023, is a victory for democracy, not just in Europe but around the world. Most of all, it’s a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people – and a reminder to all of us to keep striving for fairness, equality and the rule of law.
