One year ago today, my husband called me from the hospital and said, "I don't think I'm gonna make it". They had told him we were out of options and they would be taking him off his meds and turning off his pacemaker the next day, and he would be going into palliative care.
So today was already hard…

But then I had to go grocery shopping. Nobody talks about how hard the little things are. My refrigerator is mostly empty because grocery shopping is so hard. Sometimes I get take out so I don't have to go to the store.

HR hit me with: “We accidentally paid you $8,700 extra for 14 months… pay it back in 60 days or we deduct from your checks 😊”

I spent it. Paid debt. Fixed my car. Took my kid to the doctor. Never got a “skills bonus” email, just saw the money and thought I earned it.

They messed up payroll. For OVER A YEAR. Now I’m the criminal?

Do I legally have to repay? Can they force 60 days? Or is “whoops our bad” not my emergency?

As an American living in Germany, the German language never stops blowing my mind.

I’ve been living in Saarland, so I’m learning Hochdeutsch in school. But then I go talk to some of my neighbors and I’m like… wait… this is NOT what I’ve been learning. 😂 They naturally speak Saarländisch.

Then I recently went to Munich and heard Bavarian for the first time.

My husband left me just days after I gave birth to our baby.

I was only 19 years old, still recovering from childbirth, running on almost no sleep, and trying to learn how to be a mother. While I was changing diapers at 3 a.m., sitting through doctor’s appointments alone, and wondering how I was going to make it through each day, he was busy chasing what he believed was a better life.

Before he left, he spent months criticizing everything around us. He said the environment wasn’t suitable, complained that the mosques were empty, and acted as though everyone here lacked ambition. Nothing was ever good enough for him, and he made sure we knew it.

Then 6 months later, he came back.

Not because he missed me. Not because he wanted to finally be a father to the child he had abandoned. His visa had expired.

What amazed me most was hearing him call it “fate.” The same visa I had spent months helping him apply for, gathering documents, filling out forms, encouraging him when the process became frustrating, was suddenly just “fate.” It was as if my sacrifices had never existed.

But life has a strange way of humbling people.

I made the biggest mistake of my career because I answered a call on my boss's phone.

He'd stepped into a meeting and left his phone on his desk.

It started vibrating.

The screen flashed **PRIVATE NUMBER**.

I wasn't going to answer it.

Then it rang again.

And again.

By the fourth call, I figured it had to be important.

"Hello?"

The man on the other end didn't introduce himself.

He simply asked,

"Is he dead?"

I frowned.

"What?"

"Your boss."

"No."

A long silence.

Then the man whispered,

"So he ignored my warning."

So, when I was tested for autism three years ago, the neuropsychologist essentially said, "you basically have it BUT you also have depression and therefore I can't FORMALLY diagnose you, but continue on as if you have it."

This didn't make sense to me. How could being depressed prevent you from also being autistic?

So I went to get a second opinion. The results came back today.

I regularly taught a class called Research Methods in which I showed upcoming scientists how to understand and conduct science.

So, when I say what I’m about to say, it is with a good deal of knowledge about relevant facts:

Donald Trump has crushed scientific research in the United States.

are just holding their breath and hoping the next election goes well. Or they are still just pretending the problem doesn’t exist. Scientists tend to be delicate and nerdly creatures who don’t handle confrontation very well.

But if we don’t do something soon, one of the major forces for scientific progress will be destroyed forever. It’s already happening right now. A generation of research is already lost. Maybe two.

We are currently headed straight for another Dark Ages.

Scientific research has been a key driver of the United States’ economy, distinction, and authority in the world. And it has been DEMOLISHED by Trump.

When the government stops funding science, science d!€s.

If we want to salv•ge a scrap of what we have, states will have to divest economically from the fascist regime and fund science ourselves. And I don’t know many scientists who are ready to face that truth. Like everyone else, most scientists we know
