So in theory, this is not a bad thing. Practically however, by showing mostly sponsored content after the “caught up” notification and having a small links that says “view older posts” breaks the previous pattern in a subtle but very intentional way towards paid content.

A great example of ethical design is @instagram ‘s “You’re all caught up” message.

Digital Products compete for our time using all sorts of dark patterns and hooks that lead to addictive behaviour. Being thoughtful about your user’s time is a example of great ethical design.

This feature was first introduced in 2018. Now, instagram is backtracking by starting to add suggested organic posts and ads at the end of users’ feeds after the notification. The change is meant to increase engagement and time spent on the app, keeping users scrolling for longer

@instagram switching the activity tab to a shopping tab is them not being able to translate what the users are saying. If your users like to shop from your app - make it easier - don’t replace core features with a shopping feature...
