Long story short, Ta-Nehisi Coates is extremely ill-informed and should not be taken as a meaningful or authoritative voice when it comes to Israel and Palestine. That he is unwilling to accept the synergistic relationship between the right wing in Israel and Hamas is demonstrative of his ignorance on this topic. Smotrich, Ben Gvir, Netanyahu, and the expansive settlement enterprise would not be anywhere near where they are nowadays without: Hamas’s suicide bombings of the 1990s, the deadly violence of the second Intifada, the sabotage of the 2006 elections to prevent the growth and evolution of political action and parties, the violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007 and the militarization of Palestinian lands to engage in ineffective and worthless yet immensely harmful and deadly terror in the name of liberation.

This can be acknowledged while accounting for the power imbalance that exists in the Israel and Palestine conflict and without somehow legitimizing the deadly actions of right-wing extremists in Israel against Palestinians. Coates’ analysis is emotionally driven and an ineffective attempt to maintain an oversimplified version of right and wrong, oppressed and oppressor, occupier and occupied. He fails to acknowledge that both Palestinians and Israelis can engage in the same kind of behavior and be impacted by the same political and internal dynamics - despite their differences and despite the existence of an imbalance in power.

Of course the death of any innocent Palestinian is a tragedy.
This was a vicious gunfight between Israeli forces rescuing Israeli civilians and Hamas terrorists.
It took place in a densely populated civilian area because Hamas believes in human sacrifice.

I fly @united for personal and business and kept asking just to be treated with respect but if this is how they treat me on my honeymoon, with all their public issues right now, I am very taken aback

I just got off a nightmare @United flight. 13 hours in the air, 2 cancellations, 2 mechanical failures, and a downgrade with no comp to boot. @United refused to help. Here's what happened 🧵️

I was supposed to leave Newark at 6pm, now here I am, 8 hours late for my honeymoon, my wife unable to sleep or take her medications properly (a consideration in our booking a biz class seat)

The @united phone line: said they couldn’t help only email with “up to 30 day response time” for these sort of issues

The flight crew: couldn’t give my wife an open seat even though they had them and finally upgraded someone else instead of her in front of us and then told us they didn’t even though other passengers corroborated our story

The gate agents at Newark: rude to us and gave us no info, I never raised my voice or asked to speak to a manager

The premier text line: kept saying they couldn’t help and my flight was booked via travel agent (it wasn’t) and also got my flight wrong

We ran to our next gate which was also delayed 2-3 hours where I begged for my wife at least to have her original seat but even though we were the first in the upgrade list, no one could help

We then were told our flight was cancelled again when we got back to Newark but then changed again to rebooked on a different flight… downgraded

We then got on the plane that seemed like it was going to leave but instead circled around Newark for 3 hours before returning due to a ��rudder issue” that the pilots sounded scared by and a need to burn fuel

Then we were told a few minutes later that our flight WASNT cancelled and we had to run to a new gate where we were then also delayed by 2.5 hours

We’re told there an unspecified mechanical problem and told we’d all need to rebook but, of course, there was no agent to rebook us, only QR codes

First me and my wife for our honeymoon board the plane in two business class seats I worked hard to get but as we walk down the corridor to our plane, we’re turned away
