Postdoc @neuropols & alum @EdinburghUni. PhD in social psychology @UniLeiden. Exploring intergroup relations, social change, and psychophysiology. He/him.
It's a great honour to receive this year's @ASPO_NL Dissertation Award. Sincere thanks to the award committee and to my supervisors, Ruthie Pliskin and Daan Scheepers.
In a 30-min award talk, I discussed how group norms shape intergroup relations socially and physiologically.
🎯 Progressive social change threatens ideological rightists and challenges leftists, as our physiological data show.
📄 Check out our new paper for the full story – a key part of my PhD work with Ruthie Pliskin and Daan Scheepers.

Check out our new preprint https://t.co/VjlDDvVoEa. Together with Ruthie Pliskin and Daan Scheepers, we found people are challenged when their opinion-based group grows, but threatened when it shrinks. We measured challenge and threat responses using ECG, ICG, and blood pressure.
🚨Excited that our meta-analysis is out in JPSP @APA_Journals. We synthesized 6 decades (1958-2017) of empirical evidence on social dilemmas and tested which structural features (most strongly) promote cooperation:

And… extremely excited to share that I'll be joining the Neuropolitics Research Lab @EdinburghPIR as a postdoc early next year (if the visa application goes well). Looking forward to working with @clarellewellyn and the amazing team led by @neuropols!
In our recent study, we found norms stressing intergroup equality reduced prejudice towards migrants. Counter-intuitively, this prejudice-reduction effect was only observed among more conservative individuals.

In a registered report, we @HakanCakmak_psy found that norms stressing tolerance ironically undermined solidarity-based collective action intentions. Interestingly, ideological leftists appeared to be more sensitive to norms than rightists.
