This is true. Besides the famous Luddites, there was also widespread public opposition to building the railways in Britain.

The government sensibly understood it was a question of property, not democracy. Parliament convened committees of just 5 MPs to rule on land purchases by the railway companies.

The most important precondition for membership: MPs were forbidden from joining these committees if they represented a constituency through which the proposed railway would run.

"The People" are, on the whole, retarded. They know nothing and they have no real concept of the future.

Their concerns are immediate and hyper-local, and they become neurotic when asked to decide bigger or long-term questions. They struggle to envision future benefits.

This is why the Soviets found it so easy to poison public opinion against nuclear power, and the Chinese are having an easy job doing the same with data centres — with the help of domestic politicians who scapegoat them for the consequences of their stupid policies.

The vast, vast majority of popular arguments against them - they steal all the water/electricity/silence/precious bodily fluids - are utter horseshit.

Given the choice, the public would have cut the arteries of the industrial revolution. History shows that they - and we - benefitted immensely by ignoring democracy on this question.

We should do that again. Ignore the public, build lots of data centres, profit.

Think about this for a moment.

The U.S. Navy has operated nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for over 60 years.

There are 11 big deck nuclear-powered carriers and 71 submarines currently in service that, mind you, are largely operated by 18–30-year-old men.

Yet, for some reason, the vast majority of “green” energy pundits I encounter online think nuclear fission is too dangerous to power society.

My theory is that this is because nuclear guarantees an economically prosperous future. Most climate activists, who are on the left, want economic activities to cease to “save the planet” (or in reality, redistribute wealthy. They know deep down that modern industrial economies like the U.S. and China cannot run on solar and wind power alone. That’s why China isn’t decommissioning coal despite massive solar additions in recent years.

Government-mandated solar and wind guarantees that the left achieve the economic policies they want. If they make it difficult for industries to thrive, they drive them out of business.
