When I placed the Renewed Hope Agenda before Nigerians, I did not speak of housing in vague terms. I gave my word that this administration would work to make decent homes affordable again, and that a hardworking family, after years of paying rent, would finally have a path to a house of its own.
Let me account for that promise plainly, by juxtaposing what we pledged beside what we have actually achieved.

Can we consider building more skyscrapers, as is done in China, to accommodate more people and help reduce the housing deficit? With increasing urbanization and limited land in major cities, high-density housing could be a practical solution to Nigeria’s housing challenges.
However, simply building more houses may not solve the problem. My concern is that the same wealthy individuals, companies, or investors may buy large numbers of these properties and rent or resell them to the highest bidders, making them inaccessible to low-income and middle-income earners.
To address this, there should be policies that discourage bulk purchases and prioritize first-time homebuyers and families who genuinely need housing. Government-backed mortgage schemes and affordable payment plans spread over 10 to 15 years, or even longer, could make homeownership more attainable for ordinary citizens.
In addition, housing projects should be developed alongside essential infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water supply, schools, healthcare facilities, and public transportation. Building skyscrapers alone is not enough; they must be part of a broader urban development strategy that creates sustainable and livable communities.
If properly planned and regulated, large-scale high-rise housing developments could significantly reduce the housing deficit while ensuring that decent and affordable housing remains accessible to the people who need it most.

A 24-year-old Polish tennis player arrived in Paris last week ranked 114th in the world, with no sponsors, no guaranteed income, and no certainty she could even pay for her hotel room.
She had to win three qualifying matches just to enter the French Open main draw. Prize money is only paid at the end of the tournament, so a Polish sports drink brand quietly stepped in and covered her hotel bill.
Her name is Maja Chwalinska. And today, she plays in the French Open final.
Before this tournament, she had won exactly one Grand Slam main draw match in her entire career. She had battled depression so severe that in 2021 she couldn't get out of bed. She underwent knee surgery in 2022. She spent years grinding through small tournaments across Europe just to stay afloat.
Then she arrived in Paris, won three qualifiers, and kept winning. Zheng Qinwen. Elise Mertens. Maria Sakkari. Diana Shnaider. Nine straight matches. One set dropped.
She is now the first qualifier in French Open history to reach the final. The last time a qualifier reached a Grand Slam final, it was Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open. Raducanu won.
By simply making the final, Chwalinska has earned more prize money than her entire career combined. The runner-up cheque alone is $1.6 million. If she wins today, she takes home $3.25 million.
One week ago she couldn't pay for her hotel room.
