Work hard on the things that come easy.

This is the finish line of the 100m Olympics yesterday. What do you notice? The margins of victory were super close. That’s true – only 0.12 seconds separated the gold winner (9.79s) from the athlete that finished dead last (9.91s).

But what else do you notice? The finalists were from Italy, the USA, South Africa, Botswana, and Jamaica, yet they all shared one thing in common: Blackness. It is impossible to look at this and deny the role that genes play in success. Are these athletes incredibly motivated and hardworking? Yes! But so are many Whites, Asians, South Americans, and the rest that didn’t make it to this level. In addition to nurture (training, exposure, determination, etc.), they have the genes that confer speed as a natural advantage.

Don’t let the motivational speakers fool you. To make it to the very top, to beat out other rivals for the crown, you need both nature and nurture. You need an environment that will enable you to fully maximize your potential. Potential can be maximized, not increased. You only get to play the hands you are dealt. Training can help you play it well, but your genes determine the cards in your hands.

How will you know if you are built for an endeavor?

Ask yourself the following:

1. What feels like fun to me, but work to others?
2. What makes me lose track of time?
3. Where do I get greater returns than the average person?
4. What comes naturally to me?

As James Clear puts it, “Our genes do not eliminate the need for hard work. They clarify it. They tell us what to work hard on. Once we realize our strengths, we know where to spend our time and energy. We know which types of opportunities to look for and which types of challenges to avoid. The better we understand our nature, the better our strategy can be.”
